RADIATION :

RADIATION Gene JM Dillague, MD Mighty Dove Global

HOW DANGEROUS IS RADIATION? :

HOW DANGEROUS IS RADIATION? Radiation consists of several types of subatomic particles: gamma rays, neutrons, electrons, and alpha particles, that shoot through space at very high speeds, something like 100,000 miles per second. Can easily penetrate deep inside the human body, damaging some of the biological cells Damage can cause a fatal cancer to develop, or if it occurs in reproductive cells, it can cause genetic defects in later generations of offspring.

OUR EXPOSURE :

OUR EXPOSURE Every person in the world is struck by about 15,000 of these particles of radiation every second of his or her life These particles, totaling 500 billion per year, or 40 trillion in a lifetime, are from natural sources. In addition, our technology has introduced new sources of radiation like medical X-rays — a typical X-ray bombards us with over a trillion particles of radiation.

MEET THE MILLIREM :

MEET THE MILLIREM Radiation exposure is measured in MILLIREM (mrem). One millirem of exposure = approximately 7 billion particles of radiation Doses below about 10,000 mrem is commonly referred to as low-level radiation. In contrast, the average  level of natural background radiation in the United States is about 350 millirem a year. (A chest X-ray, for further comparison, gives the equivalent to 1 or 2 millirem to the whole body.) 1 mrem = 0.01 mSv = 10 μSv 1 mSv = 100 mrem = 0.1 rem

RADIATION FROM SPACE :

RADIATION FROM SPACE Natural radiation = 15,000 particles from natural sources that strike us each second throughout life. Cosmic rays showering down on us from outer space = 30 mrem per year

RADIATION FROM X-RAY MACHINES :

RADIATION FROM X-RAY MACHINES Diagnostic X-rays are our second largest source of whole body exposure. A dental X-ray gives us about 1 mrem Chest X-ray gives us about 6 mrem, Pelvic X-ray = 90 mrem Abdominal X-ray = 150 mrem Spinal X-ray = 400 mrem Barium enema = 800 mrem. Total average = 80 mrem per year from this source

BACKGROUND RADIATION :

BACKGROUND RADIATION Radioactive materials like uranium, potassium, and thorium in the ground = 20 mrem/year Radiation from the walls of our buildings (brick, stone, and plaster are derived from the ground) = 10 mrem/year

RADIATION FROM NATURAL SOURCES :

RADIATION FROM NATURAL SOURCES Radioactivity in our bodies (mostly potassium) —=25 mrem/year Total combined average dose of about 85 mrem per year from natural sources, or 1 mrem every 4 days.

RADIATION FROM ALL OVER :

RADIATION FROM ALL OVER There are several trivial sources of whole body radiation that give us about 1 mrem: An average year of TV viewing, A year of wearing a luminous dial watch A coast-to-coast airline flight

WHY AREN’T WE DYING OF CANCER? :

WHY AREN’T WE DYING OF CANCER? “No level of radiation is perfectly safe." The probability for one of these particles to cause cancer is very low, about 1 chance in 30 quadrillion (30 million billion, or 30,000,000,000,000,000)! Every time a particle of radiation strikes us, we engage in a fatal game of chance at those odds. Only about 1% of fatal human cancers are caused by the 30 trillion particles of radiation that hit us over a lifetime.

HOW DANGEROUS IS 1 MREM? :

HOW DANGEROUS IS 1 MREM? For each millirem of radiation we receive, our risk of dying from cancer is increased by about 1 chance in 4 million. Data from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Committee on Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation and the United Nations Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation.

THE RISK… :

THE RISK… This risk corresponds to a reduction in our life expectancy by 2 minutes. A similar reduction in our life expectancy is caused by: crossing streets 5 times (based on the average probability of being killed while crossing a street) taking a few puffs on a cigarette (each cigarette smoked reduces life expectancy by l0 minutes) an overweight person eating 20 extra calories (e.g., a quarter of a slice of bread and butter) driving an extra 5 miles in an automobile

NUCLEAR REACTOR DANGERS :

NUCLEAR REACTOR DANGERS There are four kinds of isotopes that are the likeliest, from a public-health perspective, to be a danger if emitted by a nuclear power plant: iodine-131, cesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium-239. Exposure to iodine-131 can lead to cancer — specifically thyroid cancer — and it can happen comparatively fast. Epidemiologists estimate that after the Chernobyl explosion, there were 6,000 to 7,000 cases of thyroid cancer that would not otherwise have occurred.

NUCLEAR REACTOR DANGERS :

NUCLEAR REACTOR DANGERS Strontium and cesium are not nearly so selective. Strontium gets incorporated into bones and teeth and can stay there, irradiating the body for a long time. Strontium is most commonly linked to leukemia. Cesium behaves more like potassium and circulates everywhere. It doesn't linger as long as strontium does, but it stays long enough to cause cancer of the liver, kidneys, pancreas and more. Most toxic of all is plutonium, which is typically inhaled and likeliest to lead to lung cancer.

ARE WE IN ANY DANGER? :

ARE WE IN ANY DANGER? The Japanese government has ordered people to stay at least 12 miles away; the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission cautiously urged Americans in Japan to stay at least 50 miles away. "These releases from the plant, because they're not elevated, because they're not getting up high in the atmosphere, they won't travel very far," said Kathryn Higley, director of the department of nuclear engineering at Oregon State University. "There are so many factors in our favor. Rain will knock it down. There are 5,000 miles of ocean between us and Japan. It will be diluted, it will mix with sea spray, long before it gets remotely close to us."

NATURAL WAYS TO REDUCE RADIATION LOAD :

NATURAL WAYS TO REDUCE RADIATION LOAD Introduce more chlorophyll-rich foods into your diet. These plants contain rich minerals, including iodine, that bind up the receptors site in your thyroid so that any radioactive iodine that you end up being exposed to will be unable to harm your thyroid. These foods also contain potent antioxidants, like selenium, that prevent destructive free radical activity and cancerous growth, as well as chelating agents that bind to toxins and eliminate them from your body. Eat antioxidant-rich foods.. The variety of antioxidants found in these foods help your body to mop up free radicals and toxins. Drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of filtered water every day to flush and hydrate your system.
