Making a Point :

Making a Point Laura Gibbons April 20, 2009

Making a Point :

Making a Point “School uniforms are good because if we wear them, we do not have to chose our clothes every morning. This is good because it gives us more time to do other things like eat breakfast or sleep in.” “English should be taught in elementary school because it is harder to learn second languages as you get older. If we begin learning English at a younger age, we are more likely to become fluent in the future.”

How to Make a Good Point :

How to Make a Good Point Here is a point for the topic “Should students learn English in elementary school?” Three things to consider Is it related to the topic? Did I make an argument? Did I give an example of why my argument is important? Example: “Students should not learn English in elementary school because they need to concentrate on learning Japanese well first. If students do not know their first language, it will be more difficult to understand a second language.”

Now You Try! :

Now You Try! Topic: “Should students have to take high school entrance exams in order to go to high school?” Remember! Restate the topic (“Students should…” “Students should not…”) Give a reason why (“…because…”) Say why your reason is a good reason!

Review :

Review What are the three things to consider when making a point? Why are these three things important?

Apply What You’ve Learned :

Apply What You’ve Learned Select one of your debate sheets and write down the arguments you have made. Evaluate your points. Did they include the three parts we talked about? Re-write your points to include all three parts. When you are done, exchange sheets with your partner and check them!
