World Health Day

Slide 2:

World Health Day is celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO). In 1948, the World Health Organization held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate 7 April of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is celebrated to create “awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO)”. Activities – related to that particular theme and the resources provided.

Slide 4:

World Health Day 2010 will focus on urbanization and health. With the campaign "1000 cities - 1000 lives", events will be organized worldwide calling on cities to open up streets for health activities. The campaign aims at many states organizing a one day event on sports and health related issue in the week of April 7 to 11, 2010. The event aims in promoting the health related policies and to make the politicians and stakeholders take into account the long term and short term effect of urban policies on the health of the citizen.

Slide 5:

The campaign also provides an occasion to publicize and enhance the effort of local heroes to improve the health condition in their municipality. Stories of urban health champions will be gathered to illustrate what people are doing to improve health in their cities.
