Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913. In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named a Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. On the eve of World War 1 campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1913, International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Women's Day ever since. International Women's Day Theme Slide 5: Hundreds of events occur not just on IWD but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organizations, governments and women's groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues. Some years have seen global IWD themes honored around the world, while in other years groups have preferred to 'localise' their own themes. This is acceptable as it is completely up to each country and group as to what appropriate theme they select. 2009 global United Nation theme used for International Women's Day : 2009 global United Nation theme used for International Women's Day Women and men united to end violence against women and girls "All of us – men and women, soldiers and peacekeepers, citizens and leaders – have a responsibility to help end violence against women. States must honor their commitments to prevent violence, bring perpetrators to justice and provide redress to victims. And each of us must speak out in our families, workplaces and communities, so that acts of violence against women cease."
