The Word Ninja: Episode One

PowerPoint Presentation: 

A not long time ago, in a land not far away, there was a mild mannered history teacher.

PowerPoint Presentation: 

One day, she went to a teacher meeting, and she saw a graph.

PowerPoint Presentation: 

The graph shocked and upset her, because it showed how many words a young person should see, hear and use in order to prepare themselves for a great future.

PowerPoint Presentation: 

She didn’t know what to do! She knew her students, who she cared about so much, didn’t see, hear or use nearly enough words, or the words that would really help them move on to college and great careers.

PowerPoint Presentation: 

The next day, she wandered through the hallways, distraught. Every where she turned, she heard students using tier one words. What could she do?!?

She stumbled through the hall towards door 28, and then tumbled into the parking lot.

PowerPoint Presentation: 

Bleary and distraught, she wandered down North Capitol Street in the rain. It was getting dark, and cold. The wind was beginning to pick up, but she could only feel the sting of those tier one words, and that of the missing tier two and tier three words.

Completely weak with worry, she collapsed on a marble stoop. She faded in and out of consciousness. Then, complete dark.

She awoke in a magical library, by a librarian carrying ninja swords, and wearing a monocle. “Welcome”, the monk-ninja-librarian said. “We’ve been waiting for you.”

How can YOU be part of the word ninja’s mission? Each week you will get a brief word list emailed from the word ninja. Use the words in your classroom speech. Assist the word ninja in ensuring that students hear the words 12- 15 times in a week. * Spread student awareness of the word ninja, her mission and her work. * the word ninja’s words are not meant to replace the target vocabulary words that you choose to teach based on your content and complex texts.
