Love Your Body Day WMST Activism Project

Background : 

Background Love Your Body Day, a nationally recognized observance, was established by the National Organization of Women “to counter the harmful messages of misleading advertisements” and to emphasize “the importance of appreciating the uniqueness and natural beauty” of all women.

How It Works : 

How It Works The festival will provide information from professionals in such fields as body work, massage, skin care, relaxation, sexual health, feminine health care and fitness. Local businesses and campus organizations will provide demonstrations and exhibit products, techniques, graphics, flyers, pamphlets, and interactive displays

WMST Class Contributions : 

WMST Class Contributions In our class we decided to do.. A bake sale to raise money for a woman based origination of our choosing. A display of magazine pictures distorting women’s bodies to make them more “appealing” to the consumer. Magazine comment cards and get volunteers to write comments saying they want “real women” featured.

Personal Contriubtions : 

Personal Contriubtions It was my original idea to make the posters of the distorted women display. I made cookies for the bake sale. I put up fliers advertising “Love Your Body Day”

Results of Activism : 

Results of Activism We only made 25$, which the was donated to River. We had a lot of fun making and selling the baked goods Also, we spoke to people about the purpose of Love Your Body Day.

Looking Back… : 

Looking Back… Although our project didn’t raise as much money as we had hoped, we still had fun in the process. Next time, we need to advertise more and have a whole class effort!

What didn’t work : 

What didn’t work Our class wasn’t fully aware of what we were doing. Also, there was a lot more baked goods made than needed. Advertisement was low, so attendees were low. Initial communication was hard without using class time to plan.

Success : 

Success Everyone who helped out did an excellent job of talking to people and getting them to fill out a magazine comment card We raised $25 dollars to give to an organization that will benefit Women’s Activism.
