WHEN? The Holocaust essentially began in 1933 when Adolph Hitler was put in power and ended when the German and Axis Powers were defeated by the Allies in 1945. German SS officer in 1933 The Allies finally liberate camps in 1945

The Holocaust : 

The Holocaust Definitions:1 -- a sacrifice consumed by fire 2 -- a thorough destruction especially by fire (i.e. a nuclear holocaust 3 -- the mass slaughter of European civilians and especially Jews by the Nazis during World War II WHAT?

WHAT? (continued) : 

WHAT? (continued) HOLOCAUST is the persecution, enslavement, and murder of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany. The Nazis also targeted millions of people from other groups they considered inferior: -political opponents -Communists -homosexuals -some Christian religions -Gypsies

The laws gradually took away more and more rights Eventually, Jews were gathered up into urban ghettos where they were isolated from the rest of society Then they were shipped to concentration camps once the war broke out. Here they did manual labor, often to help the German war effort

The laws gradually took away more and more rights Eventually, Jews were gathered up into urban ghettos where they were isolated from the rest of society Then they were shipped to concentration camps once the war broke out. Here they did manual labor, often to help the German war effort In the final years of the war, many of these camps were turned into death camps where thousands of Jews were murdered each day.

Anti-Semitism = expressed hostility to Jewish people and their religion. Hitler blamed Germany’s loss of World War I on the Jewish people and thought they were part of an inferior race In order to create his “German master race,” he needed to destroy this group of people. WHY?

HOW? :
