These are things that are true of all living things. You will use this to categorize pictures as either living or non-living.This cow is alive: This cow is alive http://blog.pennlive.com/bizarrebazaar/2007/10/large_Cow.jpgThis rock is not alive: This rock is not alive http://www.125west.com/images/Valley_Boulder_LB2.jpgThis tree is alive: This tree is alive http://www.itsnature.org/Plant_Life/images/article-pics/OakTree.jpgThis car is not alive: This car is not alive http://www.metaefficient.com/images/Elettrica_electric_Car_lithium_ion.jpgThis mushroom is alive: This mushroom is alive http://amanita-muscaria.org/mushrooms/images/amanita_mushroom1.jpgThis computer is not alive: This computer is not alive http://www.otxwest.org/images/computer.jpgThis bacteria is alive: This bacteria is alive http://science.nationalgeographic.com/staticfiles/NGS/Shared/StaticFiles/Science/Images/Content/plague-bacteria-sc3519-sw.jpgThis diamond is not alive: This diamond is not alive http://www.gsi.ie/NR/rdonlyres/E8A60297-64F2-4FEF-AF25-C12266F2F2BC/0/diamond.jpgThis sea star is alive: This sea star is alive http://www.edc.uri.edu/restoration/html/gallery/images/inverts/aforbesi.jpgThis sun is not alive: This sun is not alive http://z.about.com/d/space/1/5/Y/Q/sun_tour.jpgLiving things have cells: Living things have cells Tree: http://www.danielcrowley.com/slides/Tree%20Trunk.jpg Cells: http://www.britishmuseum.org/images/handkerchief_cells_216x216.jpgNon-living things do not have cells: Non-living things do not have cells Rock: http://www.global-b2b-network.com/direct/dbimage/50343312/Granite.jpg Crystals: http://www.global-b2b-network.com/direct/dbimage/50204663/Granite.jpgLiving things reproduce: Living things reproduce http://machartshorn.com/gallery/parent/parent01.jpgNon-living things do not reproduce: Non-living things do not reproduce http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Rain_ot_ocean_beach.jpgLiving things sense and respond to changes: Living things sense and respond to changes Running deer: http://www.knowledgerush.com/wiki_image/3/38/Deer_running_thumbnail.jpg Standing deer: http://www.floridaconservation.org/critters/images/deer.jpg Bang: http://www.hgsc.bcm.tmc.edu/downloads/graphics/Bang.jpgNon-living things do not sense and respond to change: Non-living things do not sense and respond to change Couch: http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/original/macys_couch_450.jpg Bang: http://www.hgsc.bcm.tmc.edu/downloads/graphics/Bang.jpgLiving things grow and develop: Living things grow and develop Puppy: http://www.diypuppytraining.com/puppy.jpg Dog: http://www.wisebuy.co.uk/images/content/dogs%20copy%20copy.JPGNon-living things do not grow and do not develop : Non-living things do not grow and do not develop Lamp: http://freshome.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/clasic-lamp.jpgLiving things use energy: Living things use energy http://www.topicsites.com/health-fitness/woman-eating-apple.jpgNon-living things do no use energy: Non-living things do no use energy http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1136/1150786357_c9d51daa94.jpg?v=0Living things move: Living things move http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/venus-flytrap3.jpgNon-living things do not move: Non-living things do not move http://www.geekologie.com/2007/07/30/possessed-books.jpgAnd now a quiz!: And now a quiz! Look at each picture. Think about what is true of all living things. Remember, to be a living thing, something must have all 6 characteristics : move sense and respond to change use energy grow and develop reproduce have one or more cells Answer each as “living” or “non-living.”Is this flower a living thing?: Is this flower a living thing? http://www.digitalphotoartistry.com/rose1.jpgIs this river a living thing?: Is this river a living thing? http://www.cc.gatech.edu/cpl/projects/graphcuttextures/data/interaction/LittleRiver.jpgIs this airplane a living thing?: Is this airplane a living thing? http://letsmoveitright.com/images/RCtoys/AirPlanes/Airplane6_L.jpgIs this bird a living thing?: Is this bird a living thing? http://www.hickerphoto.com/data/media/161/flying-birds_T5301.jpgIs this cloud a living thing?: Is this cloud a living thing? http://blog.telephonyonline.com/telephony2/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/cloud.jpgCharacteristics of Living Things: Characteristics of Living Things Standard 6-2.1What are living things?: What are living things? Fill in the T-chart regarding living and non-living things. List things that you think are living and list things that are non-living. Do not include things that are dead. What are living things?: What are living things? Living things Non-Living things . Animals Plants Bacteria Fungus etc. Dirt Rocks Light Computers etc.Living vs. Non-living things: Living vs. Non-living things Living things Non-Living things .What are living things?: What are living things? Look at all of the living things that are listed. What are two things that they all have in common? Look at all of the non-living things that are listed. What are two things that they all have in common? All living things need energy: All living things need energy All organisms must obtain resources: food oxygen water These resources are used to perform the basic processes of life such as growing and developing or repairing injuries. All living things need energy: All living things need energy All organisms are either autotrophs or heterotrophs. Autotrophs: use photosynthesis to make their own food. Heterotrophs: must eat things. Sketch an autotroph and a heterotroph in the spaces provided. Respiration releases energy from food.Autotroph vs. Heterotroph: Autotroph vs. Heterotroph Autotrophs Heterotrophs .Respond to Stimulus: Respond to Stimulus All organisms respond to stimuli. A stimulus is any change that will cause an organism to react. List 5 examples of stimuli that a human might react to. The reaction to a stimulus is called a response. Responses may be actions or behaviors. List an example of a response to each of your previously listed stimuli.Reproduce: Reproduce For a species to survive, organisms of that species must reproduce Asexual reproduction: Only one parent. The offspring is identical to the parent. Ex: bacteria, worms, sea stars, etc. Sexual reproduction: Involves two parents. The offspring is not identical to the parent. Ex: humans, flowering plants, birds, etc.Grow and Develop: Grow and Develop All living things grow and develop. Growth is when an organism gets larger. An example of growth is when a tree gets bigger as the years go by. Development is when an organism becomes more complex. An example of development is when a tadpole changes into a frog. Energy is required for both of these processes. You do not have the permission to view this presentation. In order to view it, please contact the author of the presentation.
