ELA9RL1The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation. :

Locates and analyzes such elements in fiction as language (i.e., diction, imagery, symbolism, figurative language) character development, setting and mood, point of view, foreshadowing, and irony. Identifies and analyzes patterns of imagery or symbolism.

Symbolism The practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. A set or system of symbols. Symbolic meaning or character.

Derives color from shrimp, which makes up bulk of diet. Without shrimp, it loses its color.Needs particular habitat in order to survive. Only feeds in shallow waters along the coast.Endangered species. Has not bred successfully in natural habitat since 1960’s due to development of coastal areas, water pollution, and depletion of food sources.Colonial nesters that rely on presence of other birds of their own species. :
