But babe ruth changed all that.Baseball Greats: Baseball Greats Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were some of the names in the first half of the 20 th century who made the game of baseball great. Babe Ruth started playing on the Boston Red Sox in 1914 . He pitched and played first base. Nobody plays two positions any more but Babe could do it all.
