Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 1: The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers StreetGames National Conference Lilleshall, 29th-30th April 2009 Key Aims : Key Aims Social inclusion through sport; Improving life chances, broadening horizons, building self-esteem; Increase skill levels and build community capacity and sustainability; Reducing social exclusion - developing programmes that address mainstream weaknesses. : Progress in Year 1. 322 young people (16-25 years old); 45% of those with new qualifications – YAA, NGB; 5 Youth-Led projects worth £20,000; Two young people in the Metro ’19 Under 19’s campaign’; What we provide… : What we provide… Service agreements with local projects leading to: National and Regional Training; Bespoke development support; Funding to meet local needs; Quality resources and promotional materials; Simple Monitoring and Evaluation The Project Workers : The Project Workers (Without whom, none of this would be possible.......) : What we provide (2): Volunteer residential; On-line volunteer networks; Sound volunteer management practice and mentoring; Generating exciting, attractive opportunities; Being youth-led. Co-operative Key Contributions : Co-operative Key Contributions Press, publicity, marketing and promotion – time and expertise; Quality merchandise for participants; Links to Regional/Local Managers and stores – being developed; Shared networks; Passion for the programme. : What we have learned: Importance of variety; Listening to the views of young volunteers; Treating volunteers as members of staff; Commitment and reliability greater than that of paid staff; Key motivation giving something back; : What we have learned (2): Key strength – relating to participants; Closeness of projects to the community is important; Opportunity for qualifications; ‘Non-academic’ approach; Opportunities for training and employment (some areas); : Year 2 progress: 23 projects nationally; National training complete; New opportunities around Mentoring; More high profile events; Regional and National Awards; : Phase 2 opportunities: Recruiting new projects for 1st April; NGB funding; Funding for Youth-led projects and Youth Structures; Sports Leaders UK Training; Work with Young Advisors and Sporting Equals; Get involved!
