Ensure that the location is relatively flat and is at least several degrees lower than the place where the rainwater runs off the house. Dig a garden at least 6 inches deep and as long and wide as the yard permits. Move several inches of dirt to the backside of the garden to create a backstop that will prevent the water from running out of the garden. Select and plants shrubs and flowers that are native to the area where the garden is located. Water the garden every other day for the first two weeks to get the plants started. According to Gardener's Supply, after the plants are well established, your rain garden should flourish without supplemental watering.
