White Fang by Lack London

Презентация PowerPoint:

About the author Jack London , one of the first adventure writers and one of the first American authors to make a living as a writer, was born into poverty in San Francisco, California, on January 12, 1876. Two of his most famous stories, White Fang and The Call of the Wild , were set during the Klondike gold rush. Though the two novels are separate stories, they are often considered together because they show different sides of the same issue.

The novel begins somewhere in the frozen tundra. Two men, Bill and Henry, are out in the wild with their dog sled team. However, their team is rapidly dwindling because the wolves, which are experiencing a famine, are preying upon them. The men have run out of ammunition, and are left with only three bullets. Bill tries to save one of the dogs from the wolves, but misses his shot. The wolves not only kill the dog, but also kill and eat Bill. Henry is then left alone in the wilderness with just the two dogs. Background and Theme

The novel then changes perspective to the wolves. They are suffering from a famine. A she-wolf is one of the leaders of the wolf pack, and she is instrumental in luring away sled dogs so that the wolves could feed upon them. She breeds with a wolf named One Eye after he kills his two rivals, and has a litter, but only one pup, White Fang, survives. It is then revealed that the she-wolf is named Kiche and is not actually a wolf, but a wolf-dog hybrid. When Grey Beaver sells Kiche to someone else, White Fang attempts to follow her, but Grey Beaver beats him severely, forcing White Fang to stay with him.

Without his mother there, the other animals take advantage of White Fang and bully him. The most vicious of the bullies is a dog named Lip-lip. Grey Beaver does not protect White Fang from the other dogs, but capitalizes on the viciousness the other dogs evoke in him. White Fang begins to kill other dogs, and Grey Beaver encourages his vicious behavior. White Fang’s vicious tendencies bring him to the attention of Beauty Smith, a cruel man who engages in dog fighting for money.

Smith uses White Fang in dog fights. When not fighting White Fang with other dogs, Smith is cruel to him, abusing him physically and mentally. However, White Fang is a survivor who manages to defeat the other dogs. Finally, Smith puts White Fang against a dog he cannot beat, a bulldog named Cherokee. White Fang is spared from death when Weedon Scott intervenes in the fight, threatening Smith with jail time and also paying him for White Fang. Scott becomes White Fang’s new master .

Презентация PowerPoint:

White Fang is unaccustomed to a human being who is kind to him, and is initially suspicious of Weedon Scott. However, Scott earns his trust, and White Fang eventually becomes not only a loyal dog, but a loving dog, as well. In fact, Scott does not seem to realize the extent of White Fang’s affection for him. However, White Fang sneaks onto Scott’s ship. Scott is impressed by White Fang’s actions and decides to let White Fang come with him to California.

While White Fang is transformed into a loving pet, it is crucial to realize that he has not lost all of his wilderness survival skills. When Weedon Scott is injured, White Fang is able to lead men to him to help him. Furthermore, when Jim Hall comes to try to kill Judge Scott, White Fang protects Judge Scott.

Favorite character Kiche , initially referred to as she-wolf, is White Fang’s mother. She appears at the beginning of the novel as the primary leader of a wandering wolf pack. She is in a leadership position even though she is female because of her intelligence. During a famine, she lures male dogs away from Harry and Bill’s sled dog team so that the wolves she travels with can attack and eat them . She is a very capable mother. She takes care of all of her cubs, getting them all of the available food that she can, and is prepared to kill or die to protect them.

Favorite episode When Kiche returns to the Indian village, she sets the stage for the rest of White Fang’s life. Kiche returns to her life as a dog, introducing White Fang to domesticity. However, when Grey Beaver trades her to another Indian, White Fang is separated from her. The next time she sees him, she refuses to acknowledge him.
