WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR „German Biogas Technology – Utilization of organic waste for generation of energy and fertilizer” Josef Pellmeyer President German Biogas Association 2 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz

The German Biogas Association:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR The German Biogas Association 3 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz Headquarters with 19 employees at 4 locations in Germany 3.400 Members organised in 23 Regional Groups each headed by an elected spokesman Board of Trustees elected Honorary Spokesmen of Regional Groups, Working Groups & Advisory Boards Honorary Steering Committee elected by the members for a four-year-period Operators of Biogas Plants

European Biogas Association (EBA):

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR European Biogas Association (EBA) 4 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz Founded 3 February 2009 Members: 15 national biogas associations (estimated number by end of 20009: 18) Austria Czeck Republik France Germany Hungary Italy Latvia Lithuania Poland Romania Spain Sweden Switzerland UK

Biogas in Germany:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Biogas in Germany 5 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz

Allocation of organic waste input (Germany):

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Allocation of organic waste input (Germany) 6 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz

Biogas from municipal biowaste (Germany):

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Biogas from municipal biowaste (Germany) 7 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz 8,6 million t/a separately collected biowaste 52% loppings, 48% household waste Incineration Composting Fermentation material energetic recycling/ recovery Approx. 1 million t/a is treated in 85 fermentation plants

Use of animal Byproducts:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Use of animal Byproducts 8 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz 2855 biogas plants in Germany recycle annually Aprox. 20.000.000 m³ manure Aprox. 2.000.000 t scraps of food 600.000 – 900.000 t fat separator contents

Nutrients & Humus:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Nutrients & Humus 9 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz Value of Digestates: 150 – 200 Yuan / t dry matter

Potential Biowaste:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Potential Biowaste 10 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz Biowaste accumulation in Germany: 91,4 kg / inhabitant * year Biogas Potential : ~ 100 m³ / t biowaste Electrical Potential : 1,5 – 3 kWhel / m³ Biogas = 91,4 * 0,1 * 2,5 = 22,85 kWhel / inhbitant * year = 80.000.000 * 22,85 = 1.828 GWhel / year in Germany (Agricultural, commercial & industrial waste is not included)

Biogas – the all-rounder:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Biogas – the all-rounder 11 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz The biogas is burned in combined heat and power units (CHP) to produce electricity. Beside the CHP produce heat as a by-product. With the biogas from a hectare maize silage drives a natural gas car approximately 70,000 kilometres The „biogas potential“ in Germany can replace up to 20 % of the German natural gas consumption Biogas electricity heat fuel natural gas grid storage electricity heat fuel natural gas grid storage

Biogas – the all-rounder:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Biogas – the all-rounder 12 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz

Fazit:

WORKSHOP WATER AND AIR Fazit 13 Fachverband Biogas e.V. German Biogas Association • Asociación Alemana de Biogas • Société Allemande du Biogaz Organic Waste can be processed in Anaerobic Digestation (AD) plants to energy (Biogas) and nutrient-rich fertilizer (Digestates) Production of renewable energy (CO2 - neutral) Closing of material cycles Solution to Waste Problem (Organic Part ~ 50%)
