Built by Elmer Latham, a Columbus dentist in the late 1800’s. Originally located up North of Wilson Bridge Rd, it was dismantled and floated down the river and rebuilt in its current location in 1906. It was used as a vacation /summer home by the Latham family for many years. Summers were spent swimming in the river and eating melon grown on the property. Christmas was a special time of year spent there by the family as well. In 1937 it was purchased by Ohio State professor of dramatics Herman A. Miller and his poet-wife Dorothy Reed Miller who prepared the home for year round living. Celebrated authors and stage folk came to visit the Millers including author James Thurber, a special friend of the Millers. It is reported that Thurber wrote some of his famous prose from one of the loft areas that overlooks the great room. Thurber dedicated his book Thurber Album to Professor Miller. Originally called “Fools Paradise”, the home was renamed “Smokerise” by its next owner Gordon Chandler. Gordon, who traveled the world extensively, added on to the home in 1957 building additional living space and included one of the more interesting aspects of the home a “hole post”, a three story tall trunk of a woods-grown tulip tree, a tradition in Japanese houses.
