11 th Grade American History Civil Rights Marissa Pinder

Objective: You will learn about Cesar Chaves and Hector Garcia ( Chicano’s Rights Advocates) and Ester Petersen and Betty Friedan (Women's Rights Advocates) and you will understand their role in the Civil Rights Movements of the 1960’s

So far in this unit we have studied the civil rights movement of 1964 and the African American leaders who fought to gain equality.

Slide4:

1.) Students will break into two groups. 2.) One Group will research Hector P. Garcia and Cesar Chaves. The other group will research Ester Peterson and Betty Friedan. Laptops have been provided. 3.) The groups will find out who these leaders are, what their contribution to civil rights was and tell us a little about their lives and movements . 4.) In the groups there will be Recorder- this person will record the reportable facts about each person. Researcher 1- this person will research one leader. Researcher 2- this person will research the other. Reporter- this person will be responsible for reporting the groups findings to the class My goal is to let you pick the role which highlights your strength 5. The last 10-15 minutes of class each group will present the information gathered to the class.

Each group will be given a folder for their information. What I expect from the folder: 1.) Pictures (provided) placed on front. 2.)Copy of research information either hand written or printed (printer will be available) Optional: Decoration is optional. The Recorder can use their creativity as they feel the need. Goal: The goal of this folder is to provide you more than one way to express what you have learned about these civil rights larders. It will also be kept in the class and at the end of the unit when we construct our review, we will use all of the resources we have created along the way.

Classroom management what to expect:

Classroom management what to expect Arrival Students should pick one of the two pods (each pod has 5 desks). Upon arrival, students should begin to answer the questions up on the power point. Record questions and answers in your notebook.(for our purposes just write it on a piece of paper) Cooperative Groups Students may talk amongst their pod, conversation should be focused on the subject at hand. If you need assistance you may raise your hand and ask me, or consult with the other pod. Grading 10 pots Grades are assessed by teacher How you work in your group and what your presentation and folder look like will be considered. There will also be a peer score given. I will provide rubric.

Bell Ringer:

Bell Ringer 1.) When you think of the Civil Rights Movement, what come to mind? 2.) What groups or individuals were covered by the 1964 Civil Rights Act? 3.) Describe how you would have benefited from the 1964 Civil Rights Act. 4.) Can you imagine yourself standing up and saying you felt left out or marginalized?

Garcia and Betty Friedan . Expectations: Recorder: Create folder with information inside. Who they are Contribution to civil rights Tell a little about lives and movement. Researcher 1: You will pick one of your assigned larders and find information for the above categories. Researcher 2: You will take the other larder and find the information for the above categories. Reporter: Begin to think about what you will say in your presentation. Communicate with others in group and use a laptop to see what you find. My goal is to let you pick the role which highlights your strength!
