Evaluating the Info. What’s the source? Who’s the author Do they cite specific information Watch out for anonymous writers

What Expertise do They Have?: 

What Expertise do They Have? Credentials – licenses, certifications, degrees that indicate they have knowledge or expertise. Example: M.D. is a doctor of medicine

Is the Source Bias?: 

Is the Source Bias? Bias – preference that might prevent fair judgment Magazine may give a review but they need money from advertisers Advertisements are biased Intent is to sell product

Other Factors: 

Other Factors Is information fact or opinion? Do not rely on opinions Is it suspicious? If it’s too good to be true, it usually is

Sources of Info.: 

Sources of Info. Consumer Protection Agencies FTC, FCIC, Consumer Union, BBB Consumer Reports magazine Gives information about products and compares them to similar products

Professional Advisors: 

Professional Advisors People who have expertise in a certain field. Make sure they have… Credentials

Media Sources: 

Media Sources TV, Radio, Magazines, newspaper, internet Reports that alert about hazardous products or rip offs. Need to Recognize fact or opinion

Package Information: 

Package Information Identify what is in the product Ingredients, parts, etc. Sometimes they have warranties Will cover repair costs for a certain amount of time

Advertising: 

Advertising Keep you up to date on new products Always Biased so be careful

Salespeople & other consumers: 

Salespeople & other consumers Salespeople Information could be biased because they are trying to sell you a product. Other consumers People who have already used or purchased the product How did it work for them?
