On the succeeding slides I will discuss some basic exercise terms to help you understand what is being discussed in the videos. Thanks again and good luck.

Basic Terms: 

Basic Terms Rep(s) – The number of times a movement is to be performed or repeated. Set(s) – A collection of reps. Used to dictate how many times you are expected to perform a number of repetitions. When you are instructed to do 2 sets of 10 reps of bicep curls, that means you will do 10 repetitions of bicep curls, rest, then do 10 more repetitions. That would conclude 2 sets of 10 reps, 2 collections of 10 repetitions each.

Basic Terms cont. Spot(ting) – The act of physically assisting someone to complete a repetition by helping them lift the weight through the movement. Please use discretion while spotting someone. You may not necessarily have to physically assist; it may just be that your presence provides a level of safety the lifter needed to complete a repetition they were unsure they could accomplish.

What does it mean to be fit?: 

What does it mean to be fit? You must have a six pack abs or veins bulging from your skin. Or that you must weigh a specified weight for your height. These signs are indicators of body-fat percentage, not indicators of physical fitness, nor ability. Those aesthetic features will present themselves as you continue to progress through your fitness goals and commit to a healthy lifestyle and a healthy diet. Being fit does not mean that: Being fit means to be in good physical condition, in good health. (Dictionary.com)

Nutrition is Vital: 

Nutrition is Vital Nutrition is 70% to 80% of the game plan in achieving great aesthetics and optimal health. Exercise is a part of that plan. Personal Trainers are n ot Registered Dietitians; your trainer should provide you with nutritional guidance and advice only. P rescribing a detailed nutrition plan is outside the personal training scope of practice. If you are in need of a diet or a nutritional evaluation, please consult a registered dietitian that understands sports nutrition (there is a great difference between the nutritional needs of “average Joe” and “gym-rat Tom”.
