What do the McGuire and Starfish Programs involve 1:

What do the McGuire and Starfish Programs involve 1 The fluency-shaping technique forms part of a wider program which also includes... training in avoidance-reduction, assertiveness, and background theory (grounded in theories of Joseph Sheehan & John Harrison). Program taught in an intensive 4 day course Lifetime support included in the price.

What do the McGuire and Starfish Programs involve 2:

What do the McGuire and Starfish Programs involve 2 The fluency-shaping technique forms part of a wider program which also includes... training in avoidance-reduction, assertiveness, and background theory (grounded in theories of Joseph Sheehan & John Harrison). The McGuire and Starfish fluency-shaping technique:

The McGuire and Starfish fluency-shaping technique Prior to starting to speak, establish a stable rhythm of costal breathing Pre-formulate the exact phrase you want to say Split it up into small chunks (not more than 4 words) Establish eye-contact with listener Decide exactly when to start speaking while maintaining the same rhythm of costal breathing Speak each small chunk on a consecutive out-breath If words don’t come out Go back and try again using soft onsets and slides. Keep trying

Similarities with Orchestral Speech:

Similarities with Orchestral Speech Forces the speaker to pre-formulate the utterance focus primarily on the timing and forward flow of the utterance Phonetic accuracy not emphasised. Use of excessive force prohibited. Gentle onsets minimize one’s use of glottal stops. Forces speaker to be less perfectionistic with regard to how his utterances sound.

Advantages of McGuire & Starfish technique :

Advantages of McGuire & Starfish technique Its simple. It substantially reduces blocking. For severe stammerers it substantially improves over communication ability It’s especially good for single-word utterances

Disadvantages of McGuire & Starfish technique (compared to Orchestral Speech) 1:

Disadvantages of McGuire & Starfish technique (compared to Orchestral Speech) 1 It sounds more artificial. It can appear aggressive/intimidating to listeners. Students are taught to keep going back and trying again if words don’t come out. Students are expected to use it all the time... Even when they are confident of not stammering.

Disadvantages of McGuire & Starfish technique (compared to Orchestral Speech) 2:

The McGuire technique is very compatible with Orchestral Speech:

The McGuire technique is very compatible with Orchestral Speech Orchestral speech can be done with the McGuire costal breathing technique. A combination is particularly helpful for people with severe overt stammering symptoms. McGuire costal breathing technique excellent for single-word utterances. People trained in McGuire can incorporate .principles of Orchestral speech into their technique. Skip over words that w on’t come out. Don’t keep going back to get a word “right”.

If you are already trained in McGuire technique...:

If you are already trained in McGuire technique... If the McGuire technique works for you, but you want an easier more natural and quicker alternative... Learn to use “the Jump” as your primary technique. Then only use the McGuire technique when the Jump doesn’t work. At times when neither technique works, don’t be tempted to keep trying. Just find a different way of saying it, write it down, or give up.
