It was originally set up as a Empire of city-states which had limited power beyond their country. The island of Rhodes combined its three city-states. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 2. It is located off the South tip of Asia Minor were the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean Sea. Trade center : Trade center 3. Rhodes was the capitol of Rhodes. It was located at the tip of the island to be a great port for trade in the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 4. Alexander the great (pictured behind the text) captured it. t The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 5. He died of fever at an early age. After his death, his three best commanders, Ptolemy, Seleucus, and Antigous. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 6 & 7. It was protected by a giant wall. They built huge siege towers and put them on six ships. A storm knocked over the siege towers. The second time they built a MEGA SEIGE TOWER!!! But the Rhodians got it stuck in a mud puddle so Demetrius had to leave again. The Second Battle : The Second Battle 8. They built a giant statue of their local god Helios using the SUPER SIEGE TOWER!!! The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 9. Charles of Lindos, he had been experienced with building large scale statues before. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 10. That he committed suicide, the King wanted to make it bigger and he went bankrupt, the other is that he was almost done and someone pointed out a small flaw and he killed himself, neither has any evidence to support it. The Base It was made out of about 110 feet of stone The Scaffolding To be able to move up and down easily to build it, they used the old SUPER SIEGE TOWER they had lying around The Main Support Many large columns on the inside A few iron beams too The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 12. It was 15 tons of bronze put onto the inner framework of iron on the inside of it. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 13. They were able to climb the siege tower and hoist up the bronze plates. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 14. It took 12 years. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 15. Foot to crown: 120 feet Pedestal: 60 feet The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 16. He said it weighed 24 tons, it is inaccurate because that is how much the statue of Liberty weighed and the colossus was made out of heavier materials. The real way it was made he would have been standing straight up not spread legged because they would not have put a god in such an awkward pose and they would have had to shut down the harbor which would have hurt them economically. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 18. It stood for fifty-six years, an earthquake caused it to fall, the limbs were broken open. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 19. The Egyptian king, Ptolemy, who the Rhodians supported, said he would. The Rhodians thought the god didn’t like it so they didn’t want to anger him any more. The Colossus of Rhodes : The Colossus of Rhodes 20. For about 200 years it stood at the harbor. The Arabs took over Rhodes and sold it as scrap metal.
