Babylon was a splendid city, “a wonder to the traveler’s eyes.” Herodotus said it had: Outer walls 56 miles long 80 feet thick 320 feet wide There was a giant temple called “the Tower of Babel” But the Hanging Gardens aren’t even mentioned by Herodotus. He built the gardens to cheer up his homesick wife, who came from a mountainous, green land. It was built like an mountain to remind her of her home.
