The Pharos :

The Pharos The Pharos was 450 ft. to 600 ft tall The only structure taller than it were the pyramids

The Pharos :

The Pharos The designer of the Pharos was Sostrates

The Pharos :

The Pharos He and the ruler of Alexandria both wanted credit for the creation of the first lighthouse Sostrates carved an inscription that proves he built it

The Pharos :

The Pharos The lighthouse was located on the island of Pharos

The Pharos :

The Pharos Because the it was on that island, it soon became known as the Pharos instead of a lighthouse

The Pharos :

The Pharos The building was made out of marble with lead mortar

The Pharos :

The Pharos The Pharos structure is like a 20th century skyscraper

The Pharos :

The Pharos The Pharos had three levels Level 1 – 200 ft high, 100 ft wide Level 2 – 8 sided cylinder that led to the fire Level 3 – contained a staircase that led to the beacon chamber, had a large curved mirror inside it, probably polished metal

The Pharos :

The Pharos At the top was a statue of Poseidon, most likely because he was the god of the sea

The Pharos :

The Pharos The Pharos had a dumbwaiter that carried the fuel for the fire to the fire

The Pharos :

The Pharos They probably used polished metal There is a belief that the Pharos could use its beam to burn ships and its mirrors to spy on Constantinople

The Pharos :

The Pharos Food was sold on the first level It also had very good views

The Pharos :

The Pharos The Pharos stood for 1500 years until it was destroyed by earthquakes

The Pharos :

The Pharos An unlikely demise to the Pharos is that the emperor of Constantinople wanted to destroy the lighthouse The emperor lied and said there was a buried treasure under the lighthouse and tricked them into destroying it There are reports of it still standing after this time

The Pharos :

The Pharos It seems to be old parts of other construction that may have been used in the construction of the Pharos

The Pharos :

The Pharos The people plan to turn it into an archaeological site and open a museum there They might even be able to allow people to dive in the water and see what’s left with their own eyes

The Pharos :

The Pharos The Pharos has been used in a few new thing It is the original version of today’s lighthouse It was also the older version of a 20th century skyscraper
