Created many other cities also named Alexandria The Pharos : The Pharos The lighthouse was located next to the Nile delta Was located next to the delta to make sure the silt from the Nile didn’t block the harbor The Pharos : The Pharos The city had two harbor, one for the Nile river and one for the Mediterranean The Pharos : The Pharos The City was started by Alexander the Great, but was completed by Ptolemy He made the city very wealthy The Pharos : The Pharos The building was created 290 B.C. The Harbor needed and symbol and a way to help guide sailors into the Harbor The Pharos : The Pharos The Pharos was 450 ft. to 600 ft tall The only structure taller than it were the pyramids The Pharos : The Pharos The designer of the Pharos was Sostrates The Pharos : The Pharos He and the ruler of Alexandria both wanted credit for the creation of the first lighthouse Sostrates carved an inscription that proves he built it The Pharos : The Pharos The lighthouse was located on the island of Pharos The Pharos : The Pharos Because the it was on that island, it soon became known as the Pharos instead of a lighthouse The Pharos : The Pharos The building was made out of marble with lead mortar The Pharos : The Pharos The Pharos structure is like a 20th century skyscraper The Pharos : The Pharos The Pharos had three levels Level 1 – 200 ft high, 100 ft wide Level 2 – 8 sided cylinder that led to the fire Level 3 – contained a staircase that led to the beacon chamber, had a large curved mirror inside it, probably polished metal The Pharos : The Pharos At the top was a statue of Poseidon, most likely because he was the god of the sea The Pharos : The Pharos The Pharos had a dumbwaiter that carried the fuel for the fire to the fire The Pharos : The Pharos They probably used polished metal There is a belief that the Pharos could use its beam to burn ships and its mirrors to spy on Constantinople The Pharos : The Pharos Food was sold on the first level It also had very good views The Pharos : The Pharos The Pharos stood for 1500 years until it was destroyed by earthquakes The Pharos : The Pharos An unlikely demise to the Pharos is that the emperor of Constantinople wanted to destroy the lighthouse The emperor lied and said there was a buried treasure under the lighthouse and tricked them into destroying it There are reports of it still standing after this time The Pharos : The Pharos It seems to be old parts of other construction that may have been used in the construction of the Pharos The Pharos : The Pharos The people plan to turn it into an archaeological site and open a museum there They might even be able to allow people to dive in the water and see what’s left with their own eyes The Pharos : The Pharos The Pharos has been used in a few new thing It is the original version of today’s lighthouse It was also the older version of a 20th century skyscraper You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
