INTRODUCTION:

INTRODUCTION Although word recognition, decoding, and fluency are building blocks of effective reading, the ability to comprehend text is the basic goal of comprehension skills. Comprehension skills are essential as they help us in identifying the main idea of the passage and draw conclusions after critical assessment all the essential facts and opinions.

KEY ASPECTS Comprehension Skills basically involve: Reading Comprehension Summarizing and Paraphrasing Précis Writing Listening Comprehension

READING COMPREHENSION:

READING COMPREHENSION Reading comprehension  is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. This understanding comes from the connection between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the passage. It reading depends on the ability to recognize words quickly and effortlessly.

READING TECHNIQUES:

READING TECHNIQUES Reading techniques basically involve the following 5 steps: Orientation -To get the title, introduction or content of the text. Skimming -To get the general meaning (gist) of the story without trying to decode exactly what each word means. Scanning -To extract specific pieces of information. Decoding -Establish logical relationships between facts by making connections. Understanding - To understand and critically evaluate the reason of the text.

SQ3R READING TECHNIQUE:

SQ3R READING TECHNIQUE One of the major reading techniques used today is the “ SQ3R ” reading technique. SQ3R is a reading comprehension method named for its five steps:  Survey -To get a general idea of what the text is about. Question -Formulate questions about the content of the reading. Read -Reading the text to get solutions to all the questions formulated earlier. Recite -To convert facts into once own words for better understanding of the text. Review - Reviewing your notes for an overview the text.

SUMMARIZING:

SUMMARIZING Summarizing is taking larger selections of text and reduce them to their bare essentials: the gist, the key ideas, the main points that are worth noting and remembering. WHY USE SUMMARIZING? It helps to determine essential ideas and consolidate important details that support them. It enables to focus on key words and phrases of an assigned text that are worth noting and remembering. It teaches how to take a large selection of text and reduce it to the main points for more concise understanding.

PARAPHRASING:

PARAPHRASING Paraphrasing helps to monitor understanding and incorporate new knowledge with what is already known about the topic. There are three steps for learning this strategy: Read a paragraph. After reading the paragraph, think about the main idea and details of the text. Put the main idea and details in your own words.

PRECIS WRITING:

PRECIS WRITING The précis is a type of summary that insists on an exact reproduction of the logic, organization, and emphasis of the original texts. It is a miniature of the whole document. An effective précis retains the logic, development, and argument of the original in much shorter form. To write an effective précis: Read the passage several times for a full understanding. Note key points. Make sure to retain the precise order of the original points. Check the précis against the original to be sure that it is exact.

LISTENING COMPREHENSION:

LISTENING COMPREHENSION Listening comprehension is the ability to understand the meaning of the words heard and to relate to them in a logical manner. There are different types of listening: Listening for gist : Listening in order to understand the main idea of the text. Listening for specific information : Listening to find out specific details, key words. Listening for detailed understanding : Listening to understand all the information the text provides.
