It’s the auditory mechanisms and processes responsible for: Sound localization and lateralization Auditory discrimination and pattern recognition Temporal aspects of audition Auditory performance with competing or degraded signals What is CAPD? What is CAPD? : What is CAPD? CAP is what we do with what we hear. CAPD is a deficit of the neural processing of auditory stimuli causing difficulty understanding speech when the signal presented is less than optimal. What is CAPD? : What is CAPD? It’s a brain thing! Abnormal neurophysiologic representation of auditory stimuli. Interhemispheric transfer deficits Imprecise neural firing Atypical hemispheric asymmetries Manifestations : Manifestations Difficulty hearing in noisy environments Responding inconsistently or inappropriately Difficulty directing, sustaining, or dividing attention Easily distracted Manifestations : Manifestations Difficulty taking notes Poor organizational skills Auditory memory deficits Difficulty following multi-step directions Difficulty with reading, spelling, and challenging vocabulary Diagnosis : Diagnosis Etiology: Developmental Acquired Aging Noise Exposure Neurodegenerative ALS, MS, Stroke, TBI, Tumor Prevalence: 2-5% of population and twice as likely to affect males than females Diagnosis : Diagnosis Must be made by an audiologist Auditory Attention Auditory Figure-Ground Binaural Separation/Dichotic Listening Binaural Integration (Fusion) Temporal Sequencing Sub-profiles : Sub-profiles Auditory Decoding Deficit Auditory Integration Deficit Auditory Association Deficit Output-Organization Deficit Treatment : Treatment Environmental Modifications Compensatory Strategies Direct Intervention Treatment : Treatment Direct Intervention Auditory Closure Activities Missing word, syllable, phoneme exercises Vocabulary Building Phoneme Training Prosody Training Memory Strategies Cognitive Behavior Modifications Treatment : Treatment Auditory Integration Training (AIT) Fast ForWard http://www.gemmlearning.com/fast_forword_demos.php Earobics http://www.earobics.com/ Controversy : Controversy Difficulty hearing in noisy environments : Difficulty hearing in noisy environments Responding inconsistently or inappropriately Difficulty directing, sustaining, or dividing attention Easily distracted Difficulty taking notes Poor organizational skills Auditory memory deficits Difficulty following multi-step directions Difficulty with reading, spelling, and challenging vocabulary ? Controversy : Controversy ASHA – CAPD is an auditory deficit that is not the result of higher-order cognitive, language, or related disorder. A diagnosis of CAPD alone does not qualify for services. The DSM does not recognize CAPD as a disorder. Insurance generally does not cover services for CAPD. Research : Research Fey, M. E., & Richard, G. J. (2010).
