NEOCLASSIC 1760-1789

PowerPoint Presentation:

NEOCLASSIC (1760-1789) Neoclassic furniture was established in style just a few years before the reign of Louis XVI(1774-1789). Financial tension within France at this time led to a trend toward simplicity among aristocrats. Sometimes called the Classic Revival style, the Neoclassic style kept the intimacy of Rococo but returned to the straight lines earlier styles. Free curves and excessive ornamentation were replaced with straight lines, geometric curves, and symmetry.

The same pieces of furniture that have been develop in the preceding period continued to be made , proportions remained light and delicate; but, The free curve gave way to mechanical curve. The dominant line of design was straight. The silhouette became rectangular. The cabriole leg began to straighten out with less curvature b/w the knee and ankle. The scroll foot disappeared. By 1770 the legs of all pieces of furniture were straight and tapered, either round or square in section , and the surface was usually enriched with vertical or spiral flutings. The legs was almost invariably crowned at the top by a square block, on which was carved a rosette set in a small sinkage. Cabinet-pieces and case furniture were rectangular from both front and side views, and were enriched with either wood or metal moldings. Tables of all kinds had straight-edge tops. Chair seat-frames had that were either straight or elliptical, and chair backs were usually rectangular or oval.

Beds were made with headboards of equal height. Four-poster returned to popularity and the canopied and al-coved beds of the previous period continued to be used. Small tables and much of the case furniture were toped with marble. Writing tables and desk usually had tooled lather coves.

Mahogany was used more extensively as greater appreciation developed for grained effects. Ebony again became popular. Painted furniture also became common. Straight , tapered legs were emphasized with fluting and grooving. Ornamentation was of simpler carving and marquetry. Motifs included roses, garlands, ribbons, and Cupids bows and darts , acanthus and arabesques. Some Greek and Roman influences were seen towars the end of the period. Sphinxes, winged vultures, sarcophagi, hawks, jackals, palm, lotus, fret, guilloche, and acroteria began to appear. Upholstery materials were Aubusson tapestries, needle point, tooled lather, plian silk and moir’e silks, brocades, damasks, taffetas, and printed cottons. All colors were in light tones.
