CHILDHOOD :
CHILDHOOD Mark was born 27th September 1957 Geraldine, Canterbury. He went to Geraldine primary school. When Mark was there he had a passion for mountain climbing because he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary.
Mark Inglis was a small puny kid so he couldn’t play rugby just like the others. He then went to a high school in Geraldine. Once he had finished school he had took up wine making in Gibson for 15 years but then he began mountain climbing at age 21.
FIRST MOUNTAIN :
FIRST MOUNTAIN His first major climb was Mt Cook (Aoraki)
He was stranded with 2 mates and had to live in an ice cave for 2 weeks. When they were rescued he had 2 lower legs amputated. But that didn`t stop him! 3 years later he climbed Chyo Cho in West Japan. This was his first climb with new legs. He eventually climbed Mt Cook with his new legs so he could practise before going up Mt Everest.
THE REAL CHALLENGE :
THE REAL CHALLENGE This was it. Mt Everest. His 40 man group took the climb in stages, but by the time they got half way, his stumps were bleeding badly and he was in agony. But, he perserved and put up with it and eventually stood on the top of the highest mountain in the world.
HOSPITAL TIME :
HOSPITAL TIME After he’d got down he had severe frost-bite in both hands and had to have two fingers on each hands amputated.
He took time to recover and gradually, got into his wine-making again.
There was criticism of him passing a dying climber on his Everest climb, but his group offered help, but it wasn`t enough and they carried on to the top of Everest. Sir Ed said he should have stopped. I agree with Sir Ed.
NOW :
NOW He is now a motivational speaker and travels around the world doing this.
