Explanation :

Explanation Te Pouakai No this is not an eagle, this is me, Paris Henare as Te Pouakai the Mythical Giant Eagle of Maori. I am a year six student in Matawhaura. This is an explanation about a mythical bird that lived with our ancestors many, many years ago. The costume that I am wearing is made out of flax, feathers, sacks and other natural resources. The cloak is made from sacking and has been dyed with flax dye. It has fringes of feathers and flax curls that represent the flight feathers of Te Pouakai . The mask is made from flax pieces which have been woven and lovingly sewn together. This theme chosen by me because I wanted to be a mythical bird for the School’s Wearable Art Show. It was important to me that the costume come from the Marae community which is of significance to me and my family. I hope that this costume shows other ways to creatively use our natural resources.
