John Hattie VISIBLE LEARNING

WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER:

WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER Learning intensions clear ; Success criteria is obvious; The amount of peer work is dramatic (interesting how ‘task’ becomes more of a challenge because PEERS encourage them); Discuss about the task

WHAT’S NOT SO GOOD:

WHAT’S NOT SO GOOD The worst thing a teacher or parent can say is, “Do your best”. Ineffective statement!! As this has no challenge. Lower teacher expectations…

What is good:

What is good Worked examples – (effective size = .57) This has a huge impact on students… It shows them what success looks like

Self-Reported Grades:

Self-Reported G rades This means students predict their grades. Students can do this efficiently. Why do we test children then? Teachers can find out what was done well or what approach/teaching needs tweeking .

Safe Targets:

Safe Targets Teachers ask students to set goals. Students set ‘safe targets’. Job of teacher is to mess that up – (i.e. our job is to never meet needs of children to set ‘safe targets’). (i.e. our job, as teachers, is to EXCEED those targets). (i.e. student expectations of themselves and ‘doing their best’ is NEVER good enough).

Surpassing Expectations:

Surpassing Expectations Teacher can help student achieve better: Give students confidence Give students the skill to do it S tudent need to understand that they can exceed their expectations

Observations:

Observations Hattie’s ideas are brilliant! He makes us see that students need teachers to be clear, encouraging and loving. Upon reflection… If the student can have such a positive effect on their achievement… how can they learn to do better academically and behave better (using understanding, confidence and skills)?
