Who is God? : Who is God? Imagine you meet someone from another religion. She doesn’t know anything about God and she’s curious. She asks you to tell her the top ten things she should know about the God of the Bible. …What would you tell her? God introduces His character and nature to us through His actions and speech in the story of the Bible . : God introduces His character and nature to us through His actions and speech in the story of the Bible . Slide 4: Creation is the foundational introduction of God (Genesis 1&2) The power of His word—He spoke all things into existence His authority—He has the right to command and judge His creation His “otherness” —only He is eternal, unlimited and uncreated His vastness—He is greater than His creation Slide 5: God’s love for sinful, fallen humans (Genesis 3:8ff and 4:6-7) Seeks those who are separated from Him Brings punishment for sin Graciously offers hope of a Deliverer, mercy and kindness (3:15, 21-24) Warns of the danger of sin (4:6-7) Slide 6: 3. God’s judgment against sin: The flood (Genesis 6-9) Sin grieves and angers God God doesn’t ignore sin forever Slide 7: 4. God’s gracious choice, and unconditional promise keeping (Genesis 12:1ff) God Chose Abraham by grace, not because He earned God’s attention (Joshua 24:2). Throughout Abraham’s many failures, we see that God never gives up on Him. He never abandons His promises to Abraham Slide 8: 5. God’s holiness and righteousness—He desires His people to be like Him Exodus- Deuteronomy see Ex 3:1-6 & Lev 11:45) His first command to Moses reveals His holiness and throughout remainder of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy His holiness is in constant focus. The Law showed His people how they could live holy lives (Lev 11:45) Slide 9: 6. God’s desire to dwell (“tabernacle”) with His people (Exodus 40:17-37) After meticulous instructions on building the Tabernacle, God instructs that it be set up in the center of the camp. God then comes to dwell in the center of His people as their King Slide 10: 7. Jesus’ incarnation is the central revelation of God’s nature and character. He is God in the flesh dwelling among us. (The Gospels, esp. John chpt. 1 & 14:6-9) The cross emphasizes God’s compassion for the lost and judgment on sin Jesus reveals that God has diversity in His unity (i.e. the trinity) Slide 11: 8. The Holy Spirit’s work at Pentecost and throughout the book of Acts Reveals the intimacy God desires to have with his creation. This is an intensification of God’s tabernacling begun in the time of the Exodus. The Pentecost also brings proper recognition to the work and personhood of the third member of the Godhead. Slide 12: 9. Jesus’ second coming Rev 19:11-16 As King and Judge this shows His moral authority, holiness and sovereignty His second coming will completely establish His Kingdom that was begun in His first coming Slide 13: 10. God’s creation of the new heaven and earth (Revelation 21:3-4) This is the culmination of God’s desire to dwell with His people Why? --Sin is forever removed, and it is a barrier in our relationship/ fellowship to God.
