Cellular Layout !! Fixed Layout !! Types of Plant Layout !! Process Layout !! : Process Layout !! “A process layout is an arrangement of resources on the basis of the process characteristics of the resources available.” In a process layout the sequence of visits depends upon the order of processing. Each department in a process layout is classified into functional groups e.g. maintenance deptt, production deptt, Quality control deptt. Owing to this fact it is aptly known as functional layout too. Route chart example 1.1 : Let us consider a machine shop consisting of: Lathes(L) Grinders (G) Milling machines (M) Drilling machines (D) Components in this layout 1st visit a lathe, then drilling machine, milling machine and finally a grinding machine. When the number of components manufactured is large, there will be enormous criss crossing in the layout as components need to visit multiple. Route chart example 1.1 Slide 5: L L L L L L L L M M M M D D D D D D G G G Product Layout !! : “In a product layout, the resource are placed to follow exactly the visitation sequence dictated by a product.” Its is an alternative design to the arrangement of resources. Herein the required set of resources for every product is made available in a dedicated fashion. Product layout is design oriented and the design of the product is far more important as it results in operational control. Since the route paths are known, fixed paths for material handling can be devoloped. Product Layout !! Route chart example 1.12 : Let us consider the same example of the machine shop again, the stages of processing remain the same. Lathes(L) Grinders (G) Milling machines (M) Drilling machines (D) Components in this product layout visit a lathe, then drilling machine, milling machine and finally a grinding machine in an assembly formation. The assembly workstations are designed in such a manner that at each workstation a part of the job is completed. Route chart example 1.12 Slide 8: L L L L L L D D D M M G G G Process Layout Vs. Product LayoutAdvantages tableau : Process Layout Vs. Product LayoutAdvantages tableau Process Layout Sharing of specialized and costly equipments. More flexibility Less vulnerable to breakdown Product Layout Standardized product-process routing Operational control is simpler High output rate is possible Process Layout Vs. Product LayoutDisadvantages tableau : Process Layout Vs. Product LayoutDisadvantages tableau Process Layout Large inventory buildup is prevalent. Operational control difficult Excess material handling is required. Product Layout Low tolerance for breakdown. Less flexibility due to dedication of resources Duplication of equipment leads to high cost God bless !! : God bless !! © sanaz oryh-x-sJ “Hail people who designed a way to organize things and layout’s form no less than the corner stones….” unknown.
