Connecting to the Internet :

Connecting to the Internet Lisa Dubuc Niagara County Community College

Connecting to the Internet :

Connecting to the Internet Connecting to the Net depends on (5) things 1. Protocols 2. Hardware 3. Software 4. Connections 5. Service Providers

PROTOCOLS :

PROTOCOLS FTP-File Transfer Protocol File Transferring http- hypertext transfer protocol WWW Pop- post office protocol IMAP-Internet message access protocol SMTP-Simple Mail Transfer Protocol E-mail TCP/IP Internet

World Wide Web Standards :

World Wide Web Standards URL’s are the standard addressing format used to access www resources. Uniform Resource Locator (URL) HTML is the standard coding language used to create web documents. Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) http is the standard protocol used by the WWW to serve information. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http)

HARDWARE :

HARDWARE A MODEM – A DEVICE THAT CONVERTS ANALOG DATA TO DIGITAL AND VICE/VERSA. NETWORK INTERFACE CARD (NIC) –if connecting over a Local Area Network (LAN) A Server - computer that handles requests for data, email, file transfers, and other network services from other computers (ie, clients).

Connections :

Connections Bandwidth- amount of data that can travel through a communications circuit in one second. Measured in BPS or bits per second.

Slide 7:

POTS Line – (Plain Old Telephone Service)  Cable- (shared bandwidth )  ADSL-Asymetrical Digital Subscriber Line  Fiber Optics - FIOS T1/T3 – Guaranteed Bandwidth – often used by your ISP T1- 1.5 megabits T3- 45 megabits Wireless- (Wi-Fi) Blue Tooth Technology 2.0

Telephone Modems - POTS :

Telephone Modems - POTS Baseband-allows one channel at a time The term modem is a combination of the terms modulate and demodulate, which describe how your computer sends and receives digital information over analog phone lines.

Telephone Modems :

Telephone Modems

Cable Modems :

Cable Modems A cable modem is a network card used to connect PCs to TV cables in neighborhoods where cable TV companies offer Internet services over TV cables. Cable modem and line splitter to divide television signals from data signals Requires firewall protection to prevent intrusion by outsiders

DSL :

DSL DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It provides businesses and homes with a way to connect to the Internet at speeds ranging from 128 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps and higher. Broadband transmission splitting telephone wire into data and voice Requires firewall

Fiber Optics :

Fiber Optics Fiber-optic communication is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. The fiber optic lines are strands of pure glass. 20 mbps FIOS vs. Cable

Satellite :

Satellite Satellite Internet does not use telephone lines or cable systems, but instead uses a satellite dish for two-way (upload and download) data communications.

Mobile Wireless :

Mobile Wireless Connection Methods Mobile Wireless – wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) Wireless access point – hardware that connects wireless devices to a network Hotspot – specific geographic location in which a wireless access point provides public Internet access

What's New and Upcoming :

What's New and Upcoming VDSL - Very High Bit-rate DSL  Speed up to 52 Mbps WiMAX is short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access

Internet Service Providers :

Internet Service Providers The ISP provides you with Internet services, including access to the World Wide Web, e-mail, listserv, chat, and newsgroups.

Software :

Software Browsers perform many tasks-Graphical User Interface (GOOEY) Navigation Complex Viewing (html, scripts, tables, frames) Multimedia and Languages MIME( Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) text, application, image, audio, video, multi-part, and message.

Browsers Cont’d.. :

Browsers Cont’d.. 4. E-mail, FTP, Telnet, News 5. Downloading/Uploading Files 6. Printing

Browsers Cont’d.. :

Browsers Cont’d..

Plug-ins and Helpers :

Plug-ins and Helpers Acrobat Reader, QuickTime, Real Player, Windows Media Player Helper Applications-software that can run both within and outside of the browser Shockwave, Flash Player Plug-ins-software applications that only run within a browser Examples Support
