Intro :

Intro Before the Mexican-American War, Mexico used to own other big states. Those states are now part of the United States. What are these states, and how did this happen? Well I'm going to tell you about it.

States :

States The Mexican-American War started from April-25-1846 and ended February-02-1848. The United States wanted the states of California and New Mexico. Those states now are Utah, Nevada, California, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming.

What The United States Wanted :

What The United States Wanted The United States wanted their nation to be from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The problem was that the land west of the rocky mountains did not belong to the United States, it belonged to Mexico and Britain.

Britain & Texas :

Britain & Texas President James Polk convinced Britain to give up it's land. He tried to convince Mexico to give up Texas but Mexico refused. The people of Texas decided to join the United States. It became a state in 1845. Mexico did not want to loose Texas but it did.

Don't Want War:

Don't Want War President Polk said that he didn't want to have war with Mexico, but he was going to get California and New Mexico even if it did include war.

Offers :

Offers The United States sent John Slidell to Mexico City to talk to the president who was Santa Anna to purchase the states of California and New Mexico.

Starting War:

Starting War President Santa Anna refused to discuss the purchase that the United states wanted to make. President Polk ordered troops led by General Zachary Taylor to cross the Nueces River. Mexico saw this as a invasion to their country. A Mexican force attacked Taylor's men. There is when President Polk declared war on Mexico.

Planning :

Planning President Polk sent different groups to different places to surround Mexico and then when they thought the time was ready they would attack Mexico.

Battles America Won In May 1846:

Battles America Won In May 1846 America won 4 battles in May, they were: Siege of Fort Texas, Battle of Palo Alto, Battle of Resaca de la Palma, and also Battle of Matamoros.

Battles Mexico Won In May 1846 Mexico only won 1 battle in May! That battle was called the Thornton Affair.

Battles America and Mexico Won In July 1846:

Battles America and Mexico Won In July 1846 There were only two battles in July of 1846. America won: Battle of Monterey, and the Battle of Camargo Tamaulipas. Witch means that Mexico didn't win any of them!

Battles America and Mexico won in August 1846 Also in August there were only two battles. America won Battle of Canoncito, and Battle of Santa Fe. Again Mexico didn't win any battles.

Battles America Won in September 1846 During September there were three battles. America only won one of them. That skirmish was called The Battle of Monterey.

Battles Mexico Won In September 1846 Since there were three battles and America won one that means Mexico won two of them. The battles were called: Siege of Los Angeles, and Battle of Chino.

Battles Of October 1846:

Battles Of October 1846 In October there were two skirmishes. America won one and so did Mexico. The battle America won was the First Battle of Tabasco. Mexico's won battle was the Battle of Dominguez Rancho.

Battles Of November 1846:

Battles Of November 1846 Only three battles were in November. America ended up winning all three of them. A battle was in Tampico Tamaulipas, and Saltillo Coahuila, as well as the Battle of Natividad .

Battles In December 1846 :

Battles In December 1846 Only three battles were in December. America won two of them. They were battle at Tucson and Battle of El Brazito. Mexico won the Battle of San Pasqual.

Total Battles Of 1846:

Total Battles Of 1846 Those were the battles of 1846. The total battles of that year were 20. Out of those battles American won 15 of them. That means that Mexico only won 5 of them!

The Battles of January 1847:

The Battles of January 1847 America in January won 5/6 battles. They won: Battle of Santa Anna, Battle of Rio San Gabriel, Battle of la Mesa, Battle of Canada, and also Battle of Embudo Pass. The only one that Mexico won was called First Battle of Mora.

Battles Of February 1847:

Battles Of February 1847 Once again America ended up winning all 4 battles and Mexico 0 in February. They won: The Second Battle of Mora, Siege of Pueblo de Taos, Battle of Buena Vista, and Battle of the Sacramento.

Battle Of March 1847:

Battle Of March 1847 There was only one battle in March 1847. It was called Siege of Veracruz. The United States ended up winning that battle to!

The 2 Battles of April:

The 2 Battles of April The battles, Cerro Gordo, and The First Battle Of Tuxpan. They both were once again won by the United States.

The 3 Battles of June:

The 3 Battles of June The three battles of June were: The Second Battle of Tuxpan, The Third Battle of Tuxpan, and The Second Battle of Tabasco. These three were won by America.

2 Battles In July:

2 Battles In July The names of the battles in July were: Battle of Las Vegas, and Battle of Cienega Creek. These battles were won by the United States.

The 2 Battles Of August 1847:

The 2 Battles Of August 1847 The two battles were called: The Battle of Contreras, and The Battle of Churubusco. These battles were won by the United States.

The 4 Battles of September 1847:

The 4 Battles of September 1847 These 4 battles were once again, won by America! They were: Battle of Molino Del Rey, Battle of Chapultepec, Battle in Mexico City, and the Siege of Puebla.

The 2 Battles Of October 1847:

The 2 Battles Of October 1847 Finally Mexico won a battle. It won the Battle of Mulege. America won the Battle of Huamantla.

The Last 3 Battles In November 1847:

The Last 3 Battles In November 1847 The last 3 battles were: Battle of La Paz, Battle of San Jose del Cabo, and Skirmish at Matamoros. These Battles were again won by America.

Total Battles Of 1847:

Total Battles Of 1847 Those were the battles of 1847. In total there were 31. Out of them America won 29 battles. Witch means that Mexico only won 2 battles!

1 Battle In February 1848 In February the battle was called: Siege De San Jose Del Cabo. That was won by America.

The 2 Battles In March 1847 A battle was called: Battle of Santa Cruz de Rosales. The other battle was: Skirmish of Todos Santos.

Total Battles of 1848:

Total Battles of 1848 The total battles of 1848 was 3. America ended up winning all of them! In 1848 Mexico won zero battles!

America's Total:

America's Total If you would add up all of America's battles you would get: 15+29+3=47 battles America won 47 battles!

Mexico's Total:

Mexico's Total If you would add up all of Mexico's battles you would get: 5+2+0=7 battles Mexico only won 7 battles!

Winner :

Winner Since America won the most battles they won what they wanted this is what it was: they wanted to have the states of California and New Mexico. During the years those states turned into: Utah, Nevada, California, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. That is exactly what they wanted.

The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo... The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo is how the war ended. It gave America a lot of land. Written in English and Spanish the Treaty majorly required the United States to do the following:

* Evacuate all forces from Mexico within 3 months. *Prevent Native American raids into Mexico. *The United States had to give Mexico $10 million dollars. *Also they had to give Mexico another $15 million dollars, with $3 million payed immediately and the remaining $12 million payed in 4 payments for the damage that they had caused in Mexico.

How War Affected Mexico:

How War Affected Mexico The war affected Mexico a lot. The major thing was that it made Mexico surrender about 40% of it's territory. The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo forced Mexico to give up California and New Mexico to the United States. Loosing those states affected Mexico so much, it had been part of their country for about 250 years. Mexico also knew though, that if the war continued they might even loose more land than what they had lost. That's why they agreed to signed it. Witch ended the war.
