Slide 34: Because you are an excellent nurse and have studied Erickson’s theory you know just what to do in this situation. You first calmly and quietly introduce yourself to the client and inform him that you will be his primary RN. You ask him why he has been hospitalized recently (you seek info. from the client which facilitates a sense of client control.) Henry sadly tells you that he just doesn’t care anymore and since his wife died 4 yrs ago he has been too lonely to care about his health. After a lengthy discussion you and Henry decide together to implement a plan of care. Henry calls and talks to his daughter who plans a visit (action facilitates his sense of perceived support.) Grief counseling is arranged through his church (client is facilitated in being future focused.) A social worker visits and Henry decides to move into a senior citizen community where he will have access to social interaction and medical care (helping him feel more safe and secure.) You then provide Henry with your unit’s direct number so he can call you with any questions or concerns. Finally, you schedule regular phone calls (based on Henry’s schedule) to check on him and address concerns.
