Burns Burns classified by depth (partial of full thickness)
Burn Severity determined by depth, percentage of body surface area, and involvement of particular body parts
First-degree burns :
First-degree burns The epidermis is affected
Red, sensitive, and moist; no blisters develop
Burned area is painful
Slight swelling is present
Second-degree burns :
Second-degree burns The Dermis is affected
May produce blisters.
Blisters may have exudate
Sensitive to touch
May blanch with pressure
Third-degree burns :
Third-degree burns Subcutaneous tissue is affected
Also called full-thickness burns
Skin is destroyed
Muscle tissues and bone may be damaged
Burned area is insensitive due to destruction of nerve endings
Surface may be white; and leathery; or bright red.
Burns :
Burns Initial treatment: ABC’s; Stop the burning (remove clothes) moist soaks to stop burning and relieve pain; Td shot if > 5years
Major Burns: Goal is to decrease fluid losses, prevent infection, control pain, promote nutrition
Fluid replacement
Provide wound care (1986- skin grafts)
