Multiplying By Multiples of 10 By Elizabeth Hill Third Grade

What are we learning?:

What are we learning? The State of Georgia Says M3N3d. Students will further develop their understanding of multiplication of whole numbers and develop the ability to apply it in problem solving by understanding the effect on the product when multiplying by multiples10.

What are we learning?:

What are we learning? I can correctly multiply a number by 10’s and 100’s numbers.

Let’s Review:

Let’s Review What are the 4 ways to show multiplication? Groups of 4 x 6 says 4 groups of 6 Rows of 4 x 6 says 4 rows of 6 Times I Add 4 x 6 says 4 times I add 6 Times I Count By 4 x 6 says 4 times I count by 6

Counting By:

Counting By Counting by a number is the fastest way to find the answer to a multiplication problem. You are really good at counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Counting by 3’s and 4’s is where you have problems.

A 3rd Grader’s Best Friend:

A 3 rd Grader’s Best Friend These are called factors! Factors are the numbers you are multiplying. These are products!

Slide 9:

Follow each number from top to bottom or from left to right. What is happening when you go from top to bottom or from left to right from a number? That’s right! You are just counting by that number. Remember if you can count by a number you can multiply.

Slide 10:

Can you use what you know to find the missing numbers? Hint Find which factor is easiest to count by: the one on top or the one on bottom.

What are the multiples of 10?:

What are the multiples of 10? I bet you know. Just watch this! So…what are the multiples of 10? That’s right! They are the same as the numbers you get when counting by ten!

Slide 16:

To be able to multiply by multiples of 10, you have to know your basic facts. 30 x 6= 50 x 3= 400 x 7= 800 x 4=

Slide 18:

You can also use a multiplication chart to find the answer to a multiplication problem. Let’s use the chart to find some products! Find the answer to 4 x 6= The product is... Find the answer to 8 x 7= The product is... Find the answer to 3 x 9= The product is...

Slide 19:

Now it’s your turn! Use the multiplication chart & your partner to answer the problems.

Slide 35:

You and your partner only need 1 sheet of paper between you. 1. Fold the paper into quarters. 2. Write one multiplying by multiple of ten problem in each section. Ex: 70 x 3= 3. Now one of you take the paper and ball it up. 4. The other one throw it across the room. SNOWBALL FIGHT

Slide 36:

Now open your paper and work with your partner to solve it.

Time for a Challenge:
