HOPE: THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM OF FAITH :

HOPE: THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM OF FAITH BIBLE STUDY LESSON BASED ON THE BOOK BY TREVOR CHANDLER BIBLE LESSON: VOLUME 1, SERIES 6 ENGR. LIZETTE IVY CATADMAN, TEACHER NEW TESTAMENT BAPTIST CHURCH - HOPE THE ANCHOR -

Slide 2:

Hebrews 6:13-20  13When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14saying, "I will surely bless you and give you many descendants."15And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.  16Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. 19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

Slide 3:

PRIESTLY FUNCTION OF CHRIST ON OUR BEHALF. HE IS SEATED ON THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD. THE PROMISE OF SALVATION IS CENTERED IN CHRIST. EMPHASIZES THE SOLEMN NATURE OF GOD’S PROMISES. WE CAN BE GREATLY ENCOURAGED BY THE HOPE THAT IS OFFERED TO US.

Slide 4:

Galatians 5:16-18 16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. IT IS HOPE THAT IS THE ANCHOR FOR THE SOUL. AN ANCHOR IS A COMPARATIVELY SMALL EQUIPMENT CAPABLE OF HOLDING A LARGE SHIP IN SAFETY WHEN IT IS IN DANGER AT SEA OR WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO STAY FAST IN ONE LOCATION.

Slide 5:

The 1974 Brisbane flood occurred in January 1974 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, when waterways in the city experienced significant flooding. The Brisbane River, which runs through the heart of the city, broke its banks and inundated the surrounding areas. It had been an exceptionally wet summer, and by late January most of southern Queensland's river systems were nearing capacity. Cyclone Wanda pushed the systems to the limit, and drew the Monsoonal Trough southward, providing the additional rainfall to the Brisbane valley to produce widespread and severe flooding. The floods peaked at 6.6 meters according to the Port Office gauge at high tide at 2:15 am on January 29th. Continual, non-stop, very heavy rain had fallen for three weeks, leading up to the flood, which occurred on Sunday, 27 January 1974, during the Australia Day weekend. Large areas were inundated, with at least 6,700 homes flooded. Damage at the time was estimated at some $200 million (1974 Australian dollars). The 67,320 tonne Robert Miller unmoored and became adrift in the river. Two tugs were needed to control the large oil tanker.[A barge was sunk after becoming caught under and damaging the Centenary Bridge. 16 people lost their lives, mostly from drowning, in the suburbs of Yeronga, Newmarket, St Lucia and Ipswich. This flood is one of the worst recorded flooding in Australia to date.

Slide 6:

WE ARE LIKE A SHIP THAT IS SAILING IN THE SEA OF LIFE. HOPE IS THE ANCHOR OF THE SOUL THAT HAS THE CAPACITY TO, AND IS DESIGNED FOR, THE PURPOSE OF HOLDING US FIRM WHEN WE ARE BUFFETED BY THE STORMS THAT ARISE. THE ANCHOR CHAIN IS OUR FAITH IN GOD WHICH CONNECTS US TO GOD AND ENABLES US TO BELIEVE IN GOD’S PROMISES. HOPE IS THE ANCHOR THAT GRIPS ON THE SOLID ROCK. THE ROCK TO WHICH THE ANCHOR IS SECURED IS JESUS CHRIST.

Slide 7:

THE SOLID ROCK My hope is built on nothing lessThan Jesus’ blood and righteousness;I dare not trust the sweetest frame,But wholly lean on Jesus’ name. When darkness veils His lovely face,I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale,My anchor holds within the veil. His oath, His covenant, His bloodSupport me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way,He then is all my hope and stay. When He shall come with trumpet sound,Oh, may I then in Him be found;Dressed in His righteousness alone,Faultless to stand before the throne. Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand,All other ground is sinking sand. Edward Mote (1797-1874)

Slide 8:

HOPE, LIKE AN ANCHOR, MAY APPEAR TO BE HANGING PASSIVELY IN POSITION WITHOUT I MMEDIATE USE, BUT WHEN THE STORMS AND DANGERS COME, IT IS OUR HOPE THAT IS LET OUT TO GRIP ONTO THE ROCK, CHRIST JESUS, AND WE CAN RIDE OUT THE STORM AND BE SAFE FROM DISASTER.
