Life :

Life born on June 28, 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland. His mother died shortly after his birth. Rousseau left Geneva at 16, wandering from place to place, finally moving to Paris in 1742. He earned his living during this period, working as everything from footman to assistant to an ambassador.

Philosophy of education::

Philosophy of education: Rousseau was concerned with : D eveloping the pupil’s character and moral sense. practice self-mastery and remain virtuous even in the unnatural and imperfect society in which he will have to live.

Rousseau believed that children learn right and wrong through experiencing the consequences of their acts rather than through physical punishment. He divided childhood into 3 stages: First stage: 0-12 years: children are guided by their emotions. Second stage: 12- 16 years: reason starts to develop. third stage:16– onwards: Rousseau recommends that the young adult learn a manual skill such as carpentry, which requires creativity and thought.

To state his philosophy he introduced “Emile” The Emile is a large work, which is divided into five Books. Émile is to be raised in the countryside. Emile will stay under the guardianship of a tutor who will guide him through various learning experiences arranged by him. The tutor will make sure that no harm results to Émile through his learning experiences.

Rousseau’s philosophy of education is not geared simply at particular techniques that best ensure that the pupil will absorb information and concepts. It is better understood as a way of ensuring that the pupil’s character be developed in such a way as to have a healthy sense of self-worth and morality.
