Some Jobs are Weirder than Others You might read about some jobs and say to yourself “what’s oddball-ish about that?” Some jobs showcased here are pretty normal. Its not the job its the number of women (or lack of women) in these careers that make them stand out. But there are a number of jobs you will hardly believe even exist, let alone that people can live on. If you’re considering any of them all I can say is hats off to you Girlfriend!

Seismologist : 

Seismologist A what? A seismologist studies earthquakes. She also studies tsunamis, volcanoes, oceanic and atmospheric explosions. She analyzes and interprets seismic records to determine and locate blasts. Average Salary: $60,000.00 CDN Education: University Degree – usually at the Masters level. You need strong skills in math, physics, computer science and geography.

Meteorologist : 

Meteorologist A meteorologist studies atmospheric phenomenon and how it affects life on our planet. Average Salary: $68,594.00 CDN Education Bachelor of Meteorology, or Atmospheric Science Degree

Cardiovascular Technologist : 

Cardiovascular Technologist A cardiovascular technologist diagnoses and treats problems with the heart and blood vessels. Tool and Die Maker A tool and die maker is a highly skilled worker in the manufacturing field. She makes machine tools, fixtures, moulds, dies and other tools. She works from engineering drawings to mark out the design on raw material (usually wood or metal) then she cuts it to size and shape using machine tools such as milling and grinding machines. And you thought you didn’t like snakes! Average Salary Good money but a small market. You can earn $2,000.00 per gram of anti-venom although getting a tablespoon of venom takes about 2 snakes worth of milking. Education None - training with someone who knows how to handle snakes is imperative. Highly dangerous work! Some people get animal handling certification.

Wig Maker : 

Wig Maker A wig maker works harder than you might think. First she makes a plastic mould of the wearer’s head and hairline then she transfers the mould onto a canvas and covers it with wig lace. One by one they knot and pull thousands of hairs through the mesh cap. Average Salary Can be lucrative depending on your clients and the type of wigs you make Education None – apprenticeship with an experienced wig maker is necessary

Embalmer Not for the faint-hearted, an embalmer prepares a corpse for interment (burial) in accordance with legal requirements. Average Salary $47,000.00 CDN Education College diploma in funeral services . You will need a chemistry background and a strong stomach.

Ocularist : 

Ocularist An ocularist paints and fits artificial eyes for people. The ocularist takes an impression of the eye socket, shapes a plastic shell, paints the iris and fits the prosthesis. Average Salary $55,000 - $100,000.00 CDN Education There is no formal education for an ocularist but skilled technicians such as dentists who are also maxillofacial prosthodontists (the practice of dental prosthesis) may become ocularists. Technicians may also train through a national association.

Forensic Voice and Speech Analyst : 

Forensic Voice and Speech Analyst If fighting crime is your thing then becoming a voice analyst might appeal to you. A voice analyst has to listen, analyze and interpret the accent, phonetic and acoustic traits of the voices of alleged killers, frauds, terrorists and drug dealers to determine whodunnit. She uses a sample of a suspect’s voice against disputed voice recordings that are being used as evidence. That sort of thing could take hours. Yawn. Fecal Archaeologist Yep. Fecal matter. A fecal archaeologist studies the feces of pre-historic people to discover what they were eating. It helps establish diseases people had and the relationship between humans and the environment. Average Salary Not enough. But seriously folks ... $95,000.00 CDN Education A Ph.D. in anthropology or archaeology

Pet Food Taster : 

Pet Food Taster You think I’m lying again don’t you? Seriously. A pet food taster somehow trains her palate so that she can detect the type of food enjoyed by cats and dogs and the materials humans don’t like, including tripe (it smells). Sounds like a cheap date to me. Average Salary I can’t say but whatever it is it isn’t enough. Education Depends. There is such a thing as a senior food technologist. Who knew?

Laughter Therapist : 

Laughter Therapist Basically a therapist who specializes in laughter. I have no idea how that became a profession, much less certified but hey, whatever works. Average Salary $60,000.00 + CDN Education: Masters or PhD. in clinical counselling and Jerry Seinfeld

Queen Bee Producer : 

Queen Bee Producer A queen bee producer raises queen bees for people whose bee hives are lacking queens. She has to be experienced in handling bees and not mind being stung on a regular basis. Ouch. Average Salary $60,000.00 + CDN Education Experience

Gross Stunt Producer : 

Gross Stunt Producer Television shows like Fear Factor rely upon a “gross” stunt producer to research and create safe but nasty stunts contestants have to do to try and win the contest. Average Salary Lucrative, since the ideas and research are for major television programmes. Education A lot of research has to go into creating these stunts to make sure they don’t harm anyone. My guess? A Bachelor or Masters Degree in all kinds of different disciplines such as etymology (study of insects), science, technology and other similar areas.
