Puppets and Puppet Theatres:

Puppets and Puppet Theatres There are appendices at the end of this presentation that have forms and patterns for most of the puppets. There are a number of youtube tutorials throughout the presentation that will aid you in your puppet-making.

History of Puppetry:

History of Puppetry All forms of puppetry, including human puppetry, date back thousands of years to ancient eras. It is difficult to say for certain exactly which country and culture invented different types of puppets but many of these countries are based on continents such as Asia, African and Europe. Puppetry began as a form of storytelling to pass on cultural traditions among generations. Most puppetry was used as a form of entertainment, and also for serious storytelling such as entering war, praising gods and other cultural aspects.

Shadow Puppets – a History:

Shadow Puppets – a History The origins of shadow puppets is debatable although these forms are credited to either Thailand, China, Bali, Turkey or Egypt. Shadow puppets originated 1000s of years ago during ancient eras: they were easy to make and a vital part of culture. Thai, Balinese and Egyptian shadow puppets are exhibited in the form of silhouettes, but they are decorated and ornate as per tradition.

Mexican moving puppet:

Mexican moving puppet This puppet is movable – cut out parts and fasten with butterfly tacks. Here is a great puppet blog This is a good form for a shadow puppet or a marionette.

Shadow puppets:

Shadow puppets These puppets can be rod puppets or stick puppets. Usually one or more moving parts are included, you can add them with a butterfly tack. Rod puppet demonstration Shadow puppets can be made with paper, thin metal and other materials.

PowerPoint Presentation:

African shadow puppet Add a stick or a rod to the form and shine a light behind a sheet or screen to illuminate the silhouette. A shadow puppet screen is also called a scrim… it is made of tightly woven fabric.

African Puppetry:

African Puppetry African puppetry originated 1000s of years ago. The first African puppets were stick puppets, and were used as shadow puppets. The picture here is a paper puppet although African puppets are also made of fabric, metal and other materials. African puppets are primarily used for storytelling about cultures and traditions, as well as entertainment.

Marionettes:

Marionettes Some people believe marionettes were invented in ancient Greece, Rome and Burma, although in Europe, it is believed they were invented in Italy. They were used for fun and for very serious occasions, such as telling tales of war and praising gods. Even Emperors and Kings were entertained by marionettes at one time!

Marionettes :

Marionettes Just about anything that has arms and legs can be turned into a marionette, from stuffed animals to plastic dolls. You can use all sorts of household objects – foam, cardboard, pipe cleaners, thin pieces of metal…and so on. In fact, you can make a cardboard marionette and draw your own arms and legs.

PowerPoint Presentation:

First make joints between the limbs at the knees, elbows, and shoulders. If you're using wood or metal, hammer a nail between two limbs. If you're using cardboard, use metal brads. Nail two dowels or pencils together in a cross shape . Attach string or dental floss to each corner, then fasten or tie it to the limbs of the puppet. Congratulations - you've made a marionette. joint joint joint

PowerPoint Presentation:

A professional marionette takes several steps and a considerable amount of time to make. Elaborate materials and fabrics are used to make and dress the marionette. You may need to watch a tutorial or attend a workshop to make a professional marionette. Watch craftsman experience: how to make a marionette

Watch how to make a simple string puppet You need a small ruler Tie a short piece of string in the centre of the ruler, with a clothespin on the end of the string Attach 1 medium length of string on each side of the centre string with clothespins attached at the bottom. Tie 1 long piece of string beside each medium length string, also with clothespins at the end. Attach a moveable puppet (cardboard, felt, any material you like) to each clothespin. Of course the head is attached to the centre string, the arms to the medium strings and the legs to the long strings.

Paper Puppets:

Paper Puppets Wood and a type of paper known as pulp paper were the usual materials used to make puppets thousands of years ago when puppets were first invented. Most paper puppets were made into shadow puppets or stick puppets. It is very easy and inexpensive to make a paper puppet.

CK was built by a team of 8 people and it took 6 people to operate him. The arms were done Henson-style, half arms with straps that attached to the puppeteer’s hands. Four puppeteers worked the face, which was controlled with 27 servo motors. Needless to say, Crypt Keeper’s head was very heavy.

Crank Yankers:

Crank Yankers The American puppet show, based in Nevada, uses actors who make actual crank calls to unsuspecting people. The calls are re-enacted onscreen by puppets for a visual aid to show the viewer what is happening in the call. The performers are given an outline of a premise, and call telephone numbers from a list of selected targets (known as " marks "). Under Nevada law, only one of the parties has to give consent to the recording of a telephone call, so prank calls can be recorded without the consent of the victims .
