Hello my name is Dan my full name is Edward Daniel Davis Jr. I go by Dan this might be a little suprise to you but I need more information on the Karla Brown murder. I am in the United States Army and I am the step son of Paul E. Main the friend of the peace of shit who murdered that young girl in 1978 I do beleave that the perpitrater didn't acy alone I have a strong beleif that my step father was there as an acomplice I could use all the information I could get I read that my step father almost failed the lie detector I beleive he was there and was apart of the whole thing please contact me at edwarddavis30@yahoo.com I am in Korea right now so if you have any information on the case and the lie detector it would be great

incredible...sorry I took so long to get back to you - I haven't checked for comments. There is a true crime book entitled Silent Witness: The Karla Brown Murder Case - this is the only place I went looking for information. I should imagine given the information you have given me you might be able to request copies of files about the murder from the police department that investigated the case (not sure on that one - depends on the jurisdiction's freedom of information act laws). Why do you believe there was a second man involved in that girl's murder? Curious. Such a sad story. The strongest trial focus was dental forensics, so this may be a path you want to follow in her case (it didn't succeed in getting her murderer convicted - that was some other detail). Workshop: Rape Prevention Empower Yourself with Knowledge and Be Safe

introduction:

introduction Welcome. I commend you for being here . This is not an easy topic. This is not a self -defence workshop. This is an informative workshop. This workshop deals with rape and with domestic and child physical and sexual abuse . There are explicit photographs and videos. You do not have to watch the videos or read the articles. You do not have to agree with any opinions: questions are for you to determine your beliefs and biases. There are Reflection pages you can print out to write notes. If you are interested in using this workshop without commercial gain, please do so.

Part I – The Rapist the element of surprise:

Make no mistake, rape relies heavily upon the element of surprise. This can happen in any circumstance: date rape, stranger rape and spousal rape. Anything we don’t expect is a surprise and rapists use this to their extreme advantage. You aren’t as able to fight what you don’t anticipate. Task #1: Read article My husband raped me. Do you blame yourself? Are you in danger? Can you find another place to live? Do you want to remain married to this man?

Lynn Harper:

Lynn Harper Lynn Harper was a 12-year-old rape-murder victim in Clinton, Ontario. A local military officer with a criminal sex record was briefly investigated but not arrested for the crime. He drank himself to death in 1979. If he was the actual rapist-murderer he was organized . He stalked little girls on Lynn’s route; he knew where he would commit the murder; he left so few clues another man went to jail for his crime .

disorganized:

disorganized This rapist is the Oscar half of the Odd Couple. He doesn’t premeditate his crimes. Sometimes they “just happen ”.

t he karla brown murder case Karla Brown was a lovely 20-year-old blonde, raped and brutalized by an enraged, disorganized killer. The depraved loser hadn’t planned her rape, thus leading to murder (she would tell). He left the scene in chaos : an empty coffee pot stuffed into rafters, an overturned table and other signs of a struggle, a bizarre means of murder (strangulation and dry drowning in a barrel of water).

john prante:

j ohn prante Karla’s murderer was a local loser without a permanent address. He was often unemployed, shabby in appearance and resentful that he was not accepted into her social circle. Prante left behind a bloody fingerprint on a doorknob. He forced himself on Karla, and later on police when he joined the investigation. Prante left a bite mark on Karla’s neck that resulted in a landmark conviction: the use of forensic dentistry to identify a killer.

d ifferent types of rapists No rapist fits neatly into one profile; they display “overlapping” behaviours. That said hopefully you will never meet the anger-excitement or sadistic rapist . If you do the sick reality is you won’t survive the ordeal. The anger-excitement sadist renders his victim helpless and commits unspeakable atrocities to her. He may continue his attack after she is dead as in the case of Elizabeth Short, or The Black Dahlia . Thankfully only 5% of rapists fall into this category. Video: edward kemper interview

btk:

btk Dennis Rader , the infamous organized serial rapist-murderer BTK (bind-torture-kill ) is an anger-excitement rapist. He led a successful dual life. He was happily married for 34 years and employed as supervisor of the Compliance Department at Park City. It was no accident that Rader took a job where he could wield power over the citizens of Park City. Rader’s neighbours recalled that he was overzealous and extremely strict on the job. Task #1: Video: exclusive interview with BTK killer **warning: May be triggering** Reflection: Examine Rader’s attitude during the interview . Ask yourself: What is his demeanour? How does he refer to his victims? His rapes were premeditated. Do you believe the victim could have prepared herself in any way? Rader blames “factor X” rather than himself. Do you agree?

power assertive:

p ower assertive Power-assertive rape is the most common and that is bad news. Responsible for 44% of all reported rapes the power assertive loser has a weapon and uses it to subdue his victim. Typically athletic, he considers himself to be “macho”. Often this kinko commits date rape. He captures, beats, bonds and verbally abuses to humiliate you. Although murder is not his motive he will kill if he feels the situation is out of his control. He is an organized rapist.

power reassurance:

p ower reassurance Also known as the opportunity rapist this creep commits rape while committing another crime. eg. burglarizes a home then he rapes the victim when he discovers she is there. He is a fetishist, transvestite, an exhibitionist (flasher) or a voyeur (peeping Tom). The whacko believes that you would enjoy the rape if you’d cooperate with him. Incredibly, he might ask you for a 2 nd “date”. He is a disorganized rapist.

anger retaliation:

a nger retaliation Another particularly heinous one, the anger retaliation rapist is a misogynist and is filled with anger towards women. All women. He usually has a weapon and his victims require hospitalization for their injuries. Unfortunately this is a frequent type of rape: 30% of all rapes fall into this category. Task:Video: Rapist transgirl sent to women’s prison Reflection The transgender rapist (raped and murdered a woman) claimed he had the right to be imprisoned with women. Ask yourself: Do the rights of the transgender female precede those of women prisoners right to safety? Would your opinion be different if the women weren’t convicts?

juvenile rapist:

j uvenile rapist Task: Video : 10-year-old rape The juvenile rapist begins raping young children at the age of 13 . The juvenile weirdo usually rapes females, including his sister. He is friendless and lacks self-esteem. Some juvenile rapists are sex abuse victims. Proving that rape is a crime of power and not sex, the juvenile rapist attacks younger victims, including boys, but is attracted to girls his own age. Reflection : This video depicted a 10-year-old rapist . Ask yourself: What are the factors that create a 10-year-old rapist? Should this child be tried in adult court? Can he be rehabilitated? Is juvenile rape more disturbing than adult rape?

eric smith:

e ric smith At 13, Eric Smith is a juvenile rapist. He was arraigned on charges for the first degree murder of a 4-year-old boy, Derrick Robie . Smith strangled and beat Robie with rocks then sexually abused the corpse, confirming the murder was a sex crime. Eric was an extremely rare anomaly: a juvenile rapist and sadistic killer . it’s not his fault:

i t’s not his fault No matter how heinous the act, it is never the rapist’s fault. Colin Pitchfork, a disorganized rapist-murderer in an England midland village, insisted his victims were to blame. “ She turned and ran into a dark footpath. She backed herself into a corner,” was his explanation for murdering his first victim. Task: Read Colin Pitchfork . Reflection: Pitchfork refused to take responsibility for the rape-murders . Ask yourself: Is the victim ever to blame? Was there anything the victim could have done to escape? Would you be prepared to defend yourself from a surprise attack?

violent pornography:

v iolent pornography The notorious Ted Bundy claimed that violent pornography led him to rape-murder. Anything this dimwit says is ambiguous but explicit violent pornography has a brutal effect on a child, especially one with psychological problems. Continual exposure establishes a co-relation between sex and violence, and the two become intertwined in a child’s psyche. Task #2Video: Pornography harms children – Sharon Hooper, M.D . Task #1:Video: 14-year-old faces child porn charge Reflection Pornography has a strong impact on children . Ask yourself: Do you believe children can become insensitive towards sexual relationships as adults by viewing pornography? When there is available pornography in a household, is a child in need of protection?

child sexual abuse:

c hild sexual abuse Doubtless child sexual abuse has a traumatic effect on every child. Many rapists admit their victimization or their siblings reveal this information. Rapists deny their own abuse. They don’t wish to appear vulnerable. Although he admitted to having a “troubled family” at the age of 27, the juvenile rapist Eric Smith commented “ I’m not going to talk about that.” Task: Video: Male Sexual Abuse Effects ***Warning: May be triggering*** Reflection: Was your husband (or you) a child sex abuse victim? Ask yourself: Could my spouse be repeating the cycle with my children? Do I want my children to suffer his (my) trauma? Should I remain married to him? Should my children remain vulnerable to him?

child physical abuse:

c hild physical abuse Police investigators will tell you that when you have physical abuse of a child you have sexual abuse. Physical abuse instils fear, anger and a sense of helplessness. When a child has been physically abused he remains plagued by his victimization and his fury into adulthood. Reflection: Is your spouse (or are you) physically abusive with your children or each other? Ask yourself: Do I need assistance with my parenting? Do I want to remain married to a physically abusive man? Do I owe my children protection? Task: # 1: Video Abusive women cause more harm Task #2: Video: Cycles of abuse

neglect:

neglect The effect of neglect can never be overstated. Neglect doesn’t infer physical or sexual abuse but it results in emotional and mental abuse . A neglected child is an unwanted child, so no bond is established with the parent. A neglected child views the world as a cold, heartless place and himself as a helpless victim.

c hild of neglect Beth and her brother Jonathan were rescued from a neglectful household. John had been lying in his crib since birth: the back of his head was flat and his forehead bulged forward. At 7 months John couldn’t raise his head or crawl and he was severely malnourished. Due to severe sexual abuse, Beth suffered from an extreme form of RAD, or reactive detachment disorder . poverty:

poverty This one might have caught you off guard. 2 types of poverty exist: your own and that of your community ( also called poverty and concentrated poverty A child growing up in an impoverished community witnesses prostitution, substance abuse, violence. He develops an abnormal value system and learns to survive by committing crimes of his own.

part II - the victim:

p art II - the victim Who is the unfortunate victim of a rapist? Anyone . She could be your neighbour, your co-worker, your sister or even you. Women of all ages, races, and economic status are victims of rape. Rape is seldom about beauty or sexual desirability although sometimes rapists seek out attractive victims. an elderly woman:

a n elderly woman I met a lawyer who defended a 24-year-old man accused of raping a 72-year-old woman . The woman conceded they once had consensual sex but when she refused to continue the relationship he sexually assaulted her. What baffled many people was that the young rapist entered into a mutual sexual relationship with an elderly woman. They overlooked the fact that where rape is concerned there is no such thing as consent. Task: Video Mother-Son Incest: hidden in shame and rising Reflection: Mckenzie Phillips claimed her father’s sexual assaults were consensual. If you are an incest victim ask yourself: Have I convinced myself the assaults are consensual? Is there someone I trust who can help me to get out of the situation? Have I sought therapy? Do I blame myself?

a 12-year-old girl:

a 12-year-old girl You may be familiar (although not personally I hope) with Rodney Alcala . No? Then how about the “ Dating Game Killer ”. I thought so. In 1978 although Alcala was a registered sex offender ( organized) , he was accepted onto the Dating Game Show , a silly sitcom where pretty women chose a date based on 3 hidden men’s answers to a series of stupid questions. Robin Samsoe, a 12-year-old child who lived in Huntington Beach, California, had the great misfortune to encounter Alcala. He abducted her and Samsoe was not seen for another 12 days when she was found decomposing in the foothills of Los Angeles. Young or old, no female is immune to rape. Video : rodney

t he victim is to blame Incredibly, there are people who continue to believe that it is a woman’s actions and attitudes that invite sexual attack. Worse, many women who have never been victims of violent crime believe they are above reproach and regard victims with contempt. Reflection: Do you believe rape victims are to blame? A sk yourself: Do I know someone who is a victim of rape? Do I secretly blame her? Why do I have this perspective? Is my attitude hurting rape victims? Task: Video We love sluts .

why she is to blame A woman should not disrobe in front of a man and walk down America's streets half-clad and teach her daughters to do the same thing because a man will then see her as a piece of flesh that he so desires to devour. Cultural perspectives may explain the tendency to blame the victim for her attack. signs:

signs You have reason to suspect your spouse might be a rapist. How can you tell? Here are come possible, creepy signs: He gets very angry, very easily , and throws violent temper tantrums. He often has mysterious cuts and scratches on his face and arms. He is obsessive , especially with people who have angered him. He bullies you, uses hostile language, and often belittles you.

lying to yourself:

l ying to yourself INTRO : After rapist-murderers have been caught , their wives claim ignorance . A rapist is bound to become sloppy in terms of clues. Some criminal profilers believe rapists intentionally leave clues for their wives to find. If you suspect your spouse is a rapist, it is pointless to ignore the signs ( see the previous slide ). Task #1 Video : Married to a Murderer: wife of the Green River Killer Reflection: Do you suspect your spouse is a rapist ? Ask yourself: Do I want to remain married to this man? Am I safe? Is it my civic duty to tell police? Do I have a responsibility to protect other women?

death groupies:

d eath groupies INTRO: Death groupies are women in “relationships” with convicts. Theories : death groupies are insecure; live vicariously through convicts, have few friends, no family, their imprisoned “significant other” can’t leave them for someone else. Task #1: Read Why women love men behind bars Task # 2: Video : Kirsty: Would you marry a murderer? Don’t watch the entire hour. At 1:56 watch Angela’s (a law student!), reaction when Kirsty asks her why she finds Kenny ,a death row convict, attractive. Reflection: Are you “involved” with an inmate? Ask yourself: How it happened. Why do you “love” a rapist/murderer? Do you believe his story? Would you fear him if he was released?

breaking the cycle:

Task#1 : video Pedophile confessions b reaking the cycle Reflection: Video #1 discusses rape rehabilitation . Ask yourself: Do you believe rapists can be rehabilitated? Discuss spousal assault vs stranger assault. What are your next steps from here?
