Chapter 14:Speaking to Inform Informative Speech: A speech designed to convey knowledge and understanding

Types of Informative Speeches : 

Types of Informative Speeches Speeches about Objects Object is anything visible, tangible and stable in form Examples: stock market, Colin Powell, the computer Speeches about Processes Process is a systematic series of actions leading to a specific result for product How hurricanes develop, the electoral college, the NBA draft Speeches about Events Anything that happens or is happening The holocaust, NBA finals 2009, Woodstock Speeches about Concepts A belief, theory, idea, notion, principle or the like Human rights, Catholicism, philosophies of education

Guidelines for informative speaking : 

Guidelines for informative speaking Don’t overestimate what the audience knows Watch for the expression “you know” and vague language Explain concepts enough so that someone with no background may understand Do not use acronyms or slang that the audience may not understand

Don’t be too technical : 

Don’t be too technical The subject matter should not be too specialized for a general audience Avoid the use of technical jargon Use clear illustrations to explain difficult concepts

Personalize your ideas : 

Personalize your ideas To personalize is to “present one’s ideas in human terms that relate in some fashion to the experience of the audience” Avoid simply repeating what others have said on a subject, instead get the audience involved by including stories and personal explanations
