Print can mean a lot of things, but if it is on paper, it is in print. This would include Books, Periodicals, Statistical Publications, and Primary Sources. Is he still talking?

All of those print resources can also be electronic. The same material, produced by the same publishers, can be available electronically. Typically you have to pay for this kind of content though. That is why we use subscription databases and not just the open internet. Some information is produced only electronically, like blogs, rss newsfeeds, personal sites, commercial sites, and wikis (or collaborative sites). There is also video and audio such as podcasts, online and offline video, interviews, radio and online streams.

With all of these possibilities. You have to ask, what is worth referring to when I'm researching? Sure….I ask myself that all the time…

You can ask yourself some pretty basic questions to evaluate this information. I use the acronym T-CCUP to help me remember. Hardly anything will perfectly match your need, but you want to find the best resource to support the task at hand. TIMELINESS CREDIBILITY COVERAGE USEFULNESS PURPOSE When was it created? For your purposes, does it need to be up-to-date? Do multiple sites, sources, institutions, or individuals give this source credibility? Does it summarize or explain in depth? Does it cover multiple viewpoints? No matter how interesting or informative the resource is, does it meet your need? What kind of resource do you need? Was this created to…inform? entertain? persuade? profit?

So when you're looking at Mad magazine, you could figure out that it was primarily created to entertain. A lot of those articles might be trying to make a point as well, but it isn't the first source you'd look at for facts. Just because it is trying to persuade you doesn't make it worthless, but you have to try and figure out how the perspective of the author shapes the information and take that into account when you use it.
