Slide 1:

Step-by-Step Techniques for assisting Information Literacy and writing skills Developed by Dr. Ania Lian Dr. Ania Lian

Slide 2:

About our method Writing Templates take you through a series of STEPS that assist the development of Information Literacy and writing skills. Teachers do find it hard to explain how to produce a critically-explored assignment or research projects. Our work with students in Australia and Thailand has helped us develop some useful guidelines. The same guiding steps can also be used to evaluate texts.

Slide 3:

The method is simple and it will ensure that all aspects of your writing are covered. The method works, because it keeps you on track. You stay focused on your question and explore its conceptual bases. The method shows steps to follow in order to create a good text. Again, it works by introducing new information at each step of the process, while preserving the old. This is how the process works!

Slide 4:

NOTE: You must trust the process as you follow it. Experience shows that, very often, it is not the method that breaks. More likely, it is our own bias that prevents us from working with concepts critically. Enjoy.

Slide 5:

The Steps NOTE: Follow the steps diligently. For each step assign a separate section in your text document. Important: As you follow the STEPS, you will see that, at times, you will feel that you cannot simply include old information and add new information as well. You may feel that you would like to CHANGE the text from the previous STEPS. You can and should do this but …. For example, if you are in STEP 4 and want to change the text that you wrote in STEP 2 or 3, you MUST change this text ALSO in those earlier STEPS (sections). Only by so doing can you ensure that your changes are correct and that your writing is not becoming chaotic. This is exactly how this method works.

Slide 6:

The Method for Analysing a Question STEP 1 -  Your question and its relevance STEP 2 - Methodology: Describe the course of your inquiry. STEP 3 - Identifying the scope of your inquiry . Provide a rationale explaining the kinds of information (evidence) you will be looking for in relation to your question. STEP 4 - Collect relevant evidence materials (data) and list them. STEP 5 - Looking for commonalities in your data. Group the information/data/evidence you collected in terms of the assumptions that they share. STEP 6 - Identify points of contention in your data/information/evidence.   STEP 7 - Your assignment so far - putting it all together. In the available space, start inserting text from each of the STEPS completed so far. STEP 8 - Outcomes and new questions. Summarise your findings and identify what issues still need to be resolved, given the contradictions in your data. STEP 9 - Conclusion. Summarise your assignment by stating clearly what you have done and how all this helped you respond to the assignment question.
