Characteristics of Professional Writing : Characteristics of Professional Writing Purposeful Economical Reader-oriented Purposeful : Purposeful Accomplishes a clearly defined goal. States this goal clearly and concisely. An employee with good writing skills is a valuable employee. Economical : Economical Writing that uses the fewest number of words to express an idea effectively; concise. Don’t sacrifice meaning in the interest of conciseness; just don’t use unnecessary “fluff.” Reader-oriented : Reader-oriented Keep the reader in mind as you write. Constantly question yourself: Will my reader understand my point? Could my reader misunderstand what I’m trying to say? How can I express this more effectively?
