MALE SHORTAGE IN NURSING : 

MALE SHORTAGE IN NURSING Men account for 50% of population Only 10% are U.S. male registered nurses Only 6% are male faculty Male student nurses comprise 17% Compared to 84% for female nurses According to 2006 Demographics & Trends

NEEDS OF MALE NURSING STUDENTS : 

NEEDS OF MALE NURSING STUDENTS Six gender minority students shared their needs Need supportive faculty Need male support groups Need supportive students Need decrease in roadblock for obstetrics

ROLE STRAIN OF MALE NURSING STUDENTS IN OBSTETRICS : 

ROLE STRAIN OF MALE NURSING STUDENTS IN OBSTETRICS 95 female and 55 male nursing students were surveyed after completing obstetrical training 58% role strain in male students & 30% female Attitude toward clinical instructors Attitude toward patients and family Lack of interest in nursing Attitude toward physician

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS : 

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS Clinical instructors and physicians need to self examine their beliefs and this could validate the evidence of stereotyped gender based attitudes In order to reduce role strains experienced by male nursing students One way would be to include reflection in post clinical conference especially for males

CONCLUSION : 

CONCLUSION There is already a male nursing student shortage Also a male faculty shortage Add a role strain for men in obstetrics and Retention could be affected Faculty could model non-discriminatory measures for success
