CONSTRUCTIVISM : 

CONSTRUCTIVISM Is used as the foundation for facilitating active learning in the skills course which I am teaching It engages the learner with knowledge-building and social processes for knowledge Young & Paterson, 2007 According to Piaget it is an individual’s cognitive development

THE PROBLEM IS: STUDENTS LACK OF CULTURAL AWARENESS/ COMPETENCE :

IDENTIFY POTENTIAL BIAS’, PREJUDICES OR STEREOTYPING What are your beliefs, opinions, thoughts, and feelings about taking care of following groups Elderly Children Women Men Pregnant teenager Promiscuous man or woman Alcoholic or drug addict Person infected with HIV Person with political beliefs other than own Person with tattoos Obese individual Extremely thin person

CULTURAL ASSESSMENT TEMPLATE : 

CULTURAL ASSESSMENT TEMPLATE Introductory questions What is individuals primary language What are individuals personal beliefs about health and illness What religious influences affect the individual What are the roles of individual people in the family Does the individual have special dietary practices

EVALUATION : 

EVALUATION Positive outcome with all students completing journal assignment and interview in detail Students had constructed cultural awareness Students had constructed cultural knowledge Students had constructed cultural skill Students had constructed cultural encounter

DISCUSSION : 

DISCUSSION Constructivism learning theory could be a highly appropriate pedagogy for teaching cultural awareness/competence in nursing It could build on students existing knowledge and experience The course assignments were well received by the students Students shared insights and growth of cultural development
