About PH Latin Society: 

The Pulmonary Hypertension Latin Society is a non-profit organization. Its main objective is to act as a support group for those persons from Latino America that suffer this rare condition. The purpose is to have one organization that coordinate the efforts to facilitate information and medicines to those that suffer this very rare and incurable illness in the Latin America region. This is the next step to a process that began in Venezuela a few years ago with help of a non-profit organization called 'FUNDAMIDE', that was formed to help one patient (Migdalia Denis) of this condition and later expanded its scope to help other people with the same condition. Objectives: 

Objectives To present this project to different organizations/foundations in the United States and Europe pledging for funds to continue this project. To establish the required contacts for each country associated with the program and to incentive them to join the organization facilitating that way the awareness of this condition. To make contact with appropriate doctors and hospitals that could be interested in the project for each country of the region.

Objectives: 

To establish contact with the drug’s manufacturing and distribution companies pledging for their support through donation of medicines that will give patients a better opportunity of living on those developing countries. To raise the funds required to accomplish this mission and to incentive the manufacturer to reduce their prices. To find resources willing to give meetings and conferences about this condition at each country of the region. Objectives

Achievements: 

Achievements Authorization to import specific medicines to treat this condition in Venezuela. Currently, this authorization is issued under special request and only for persons diagnosed with this condition. The condition has been declared as a Public Health problem in Venezuela The government’s Social Security has subsidized the medicine yearly costs for some patients. Migdalia Denis talked about the condition at the Internal Medicine and Neumology Congress held in February 2002 at the Caracas Hilton. Over 300 doctors attended the congress.

Achievements: 

Venezuela was represented for the first time at the 5th International Lung Hypertension Congress held in Irvine, California, June 2002. In July 2002, we were able to convince Glaxo (the distributor of FLOLAN) to maintain enough medicine stock for one patient. With help of private persons and entities we have been able to obtain treatments to several new patients. Achievements

Achievements continued…: 

A web page actually under construction will supply information to each of the associated countries. It will have links to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (www.phassociation.org) and guidelines to doctors and clinics where treatment can be received. At the moment we have this web page: http://denissantana.tripod.com/migdalia/index.html We have developed relationships with a group of patients and doctors from some countries focusing the education and awareness of the condition. This countries include Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Puerto Rico. The problem has called the attention of the general population through the following events: 1.- TV News coverage: Televen and Radio Caracas TV. Telemundo (Miami) Show De Mananitas. 2.- Radio: Interview with Dr. Gessen 3.- Venezuelan’s Newspapers: Qiuinto Dia, El Nacional, Panacea 4.- Miami Newspapers: El Venezolano, El Sentinel, Mercado de Dinero.
