PH Latin Society Migdalia Denis

About PH Latin Society:

The Pulmonary Hypertension Latin Society is a non-profit organization. Its main objective It is be to act as a support group for those persons that suffer this rare illness that live in Latin America. The purpose is to consolidate under one organization every effort made in each South American country to make available information and medicines to those that suffer this very rare and non curable illness. This is another step forward to that process that began in Venezuela two years ago, mainly thanks to a non profit association 'FUNDAMIDE', that was formed to help a victim of this sickness and that has expanded its scope to help other people with the same illness. About PH Latin Society

Objectives:

Objectives Bring this project to different organizations and foundations in the United States and Europe in search of the required fund to initiate this project. Incorporate a Non profit association in the United States under the title 'PH Latin Society'. Establish the required contacts in every country associated with the program to incentive them to join the ONG, organization through which we could create more world awareness of this sickness. Contact Doctors and hospitals that are interested in this project in each country. Contact the manufacturing laboratories and convince them to distribute the required medicines to Latin America, thus giving those persons living there the same opportunity to live that those that are sick have in the developed countries. Have the association raise the required funds required to accomplish its mission and incentive the manufactures to lower their prices. Channel resources to give conferences to the different medical associations in each country.

Achievements:

Achievements Authorization issued by the pertinent authorities to allow specific medicines to treat this sickness is imported in Venezuela. Currently, this authorization is issued under special request and only for persons diagnosed with this condition. This condition has been declared as a Public health Problem in Venezuela The government Social Security institution has subsidized the medicine costs for some patient for one year. This condition was covered by Migdalia Denis at an Internal medicine and Neumonology Congress held in February 2002 at the Hotel Caracas Hilton, Over 300 doctors attended the congress. Venezuela was represented for the first time at the 5th International Lung Hypertension Congress held in Irving, California , June 2002 In July 2002, we were able to convince GLAXO (The manufacturer of FLOLAN) to maintain enough medicine stock for one patient. Unfortunately due to the non-payment compliment by the Venezuelan Social Security Institution, this process was suspended, leaving the patient without medicine coverage. We have been able thru the help of private people to obtain treatments to several new patients.

Achievements continued…:

A support group is being created on the Internet with members from different Latin America countries and Spain, (http://ar.groups.yahoo.com/group/hipertensospulmonares). A WEB page is being developed. It will supply information to each of the associated countries. It will have links to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (www.phassociation.org) as also guides to doctors and clinics where treatment can be received. Now we have this web page: http://denissantana.tripod.com/migdalia/index.html We have developed relationships with a group of patients and doctors from some countries geared towards developing education and awareness processes. This countries include Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Puerto Rico. The problem has been brought to the attention of the general population thru the following events: 1.- TV News coverage: Televen and Radio Caracas TV. Telemundo (Miami) Show De Mananitas. 2.- Radio: Interview with Dr. Gessen 3.- Venezuelans Newspapers: Qiuinto Dia, El nacional, Panacea 4.- Miami Newspapers: El Venezolano, El Sentinel, Mercado de Dinero.
