She plays investigatory role in criminal cases by working both cooperatively independently with state as well as local police. Her responsibilities involve the following:  Taking victim statements  Compiling analyzing forensic evidence to build criminal cases  Gathering facts  Conducting witness interviews As a District Attorney Leslie manages special units designated to investigate certain crimes such as white collar crimes cyber threats sexual abuse and elder abuse. Leslie represents the public in the court proceedings relating to criminal prosecutions. She also attends bail motion hearings and takes criminal charges before juries judges at a trial. She examines expert witnesses i.e. medical examiner eyewitnesses and presents evidence such as surveillance tapes or murder weapon.

Leslie McHugh makes final evaluations on whether to prepare criminal charges in the court against alleged criminals. With her legal proficiency she is able to convince the juries that the criminal charges are valid fully justified. She has independently filed many criminal charges except 1 st degree murder. If a prosecutor decides to go forward with a case she studies all the evidence presented in order to ensure it meets all the elements of the crime. Her job is to make sure that the evidence admissible in the case is enough to meet this burden. Once the jury is enrolled she presents them with the opening statement summarizing the case. She is able to make appropriate objections against the evidence which is inadmissible under the rules. Leslie takes necessary steps in order to inform an accused of his/her legal rights. She also informs the court of any new evidence which she discovers in the middle of the trial in order to exculpate defendants.
