ESL Robots Project http://www.eslfast.com/robot/ Ron Chang Lee, Ph.D. With funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Pasadena City College

Choose from Hundreds of Conversations :

Choose from Hundreds of Conversations About 1,500 conversations have been created. ESL instructors and students can choose from many different topics to study.

Listen to Conversations :

Listen to Conversations High-quality audio files are available online. Students can listen to the conversations as many times as they want. They can listen to the conversations in a computer lab or at home. They can download the audio files to an mp3 player.

Read Conversations Aloud :

Read Conversations Aloud Students read the conversations aloud to get the mouth muscles trained and improve their pronunciation. The variety of topics allows students to choose what they are interested in. Students learn how to say the same thing in different ways.

Practice Conversations with the Robot :

Practice Conversations with the Robot Students select a conversation to practice with the robot. They type a question and the robot responds by voice and in print. Students can ask the same question in different ways, and the robot will respond differently each time.

Chat with the Robot :

Chat with the Robot Ask the robot any question and get an appropriate response. Each robot specializes in one general topic.

The Robot Can Point Out Students’ Mistakes :

The Robot Can Point Out Students’ Mistakes The robot can point out some of students’ spelling and grammatical errors.

The Robots Can Learn :

The Robots Can Learn Conversation logs can be checked to find out how the robot is responding to users. The robot can be trained to say things differently and appropriately. Language patterns can be identified to make the robot responses more human-like.

Students Will Be Able to Ask Orally Instead of Typing :

Students Will Be Able to Ask Orally Instead of Typing With future funding, it’s possible for students to communicate with the robot by speaking into a microphone.
